He finished at the top of his class and, upon his return to the U.S., began accepting commissions, which ultimately placed his work in several countries.
In the local area, some of his work may be seen in the carved and painted coat of arms of Bishop Galeone in the Cathedral Basilica and in the rotunda and Flagler Room of Flagler College as well as the Flagler College ceremonial mace. St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jacksonville is also the home of some of his significant pieces.
In addition to his original works, he performed exacting restorations for the Lightner Museum and several antique dealers.

Rita Gwen Bowles Pearson left this earth peacefully on Feb. 28, 2010.
Born in Blountstown, Fla., on Feb. 5, 1930, to C.B. and Velma Bowles, Rita moved to Clay County as a small child when her father took a teaching position there. She shared fond memories of growing up in Green Cove Springs as well as time spent with grandparents in Blountstown or near Silver Street, S.C. during alternating summers.
Growing up, Rita was active in all aspects of small-town life and excelled in everything she did. She graduated as valedictorian from Clay High in 1947 and headed to Florida State University, where she would complete a double major in English and education along with a double minor in Spanish and history. Along the way, she played intramural sports and served as president of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority.
After graduating in 1951, she returned home, where her father served as superintendent of schools for Clay County. She took a teaching position in St. Johns County to avoid any conflict that working under him might present and resided and worked there for the rest of her life.
Rita met her future husband while he was stationed at Naval Base Green Cove Springs, Fla. In 1953, she and Robert Bruce Pearson married. They were married for over 46 years at the time of his passing in 2000.
Rita taught in the St. Johns County public schools for 18 years, mostly teaching seventh-grade English. For the next 25 years, she taught secondary English, Spanish and history at the Florida State School for the Blind. She retired with more than 43 years of teaching experience.
Though she received many accolades for her skills along the way, the most meaningful reward was seeing her former students succeed. She was proud to have taught over 3,000 students in her career and loved to hear about what they were doing as adults.
In retirement, she frequently ran into former students and never failed to remember someone she had taught. Officially retired in 1995, she continued to teach her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and anyone else in her path throughout the remaining years of her life.
Rita believed that God had a plan for her and was confident that she would be all right following it regardless of where it led. She was the caretaker of her family and friends and was always looking for ways to do something to make someone's life a little easier. Her life journey led her through an almost 19-year battle with breast cancer during which she was a remarkable role model for all who knew her.
She was ever-present at birthday parties, band competitions, ballet or piano recitals, karate demonstrations, choir performances, football games and other activities involving her grandchildren or great-grandchildren, frequently scheduling her treatment or doctors' appointments around the activities to avoid missing them.
Known for an unbelievable memory and vast knowledge store, Rita's interests and talents were varied and included being a gifted pianist, tireless gardener, perennial student of Florida history and absolute expert bargain-shopper. She enjoyed being a member of the Scimitars, the retired teachers' group and the retired post office breakfast crew and was a frequent line-dancer at the Council on Aging. She will be greatly missed.
In addition to her parents and husband, Rita was pre-deceased by her brother, Claude Broadus Bowles Jr., and her daughter, Gwen Diane Pearson.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory her daughter, Pamela Pearson Mann (William); son-in-law, Charles Keith Sellner; brothers, John William Bowles (Linda) of Orange Park and Donovan Trammell Bowles (Kristine) of Green Cove Springs; granddaughters, Summer Leigh Kleinfelder (Patrick) and Reed Ellis Mann; grandson, William Pearson Mann; great-granddaughter, Alexis Autumn Butler; great-grandsons, Andrew Aidan Butler and Adam Pearson Kleinfelder; cousins, nieces, nephews, former students and friends.
A celebration of Rita's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at Craig Funeral Home Chapel. Private burial will take place at Atkins Cemetery, Blountstown, Fla., on March 5, 2010.

Anna Ruth Peterson, 89, formerly of St. Augustine Fla., died peacefully on Dec. 19, 2010. She was living in Raymore, Mo., near her eldest daughter, Diane Deaton. She was buried in a private service at Pacific View Cemetery, Corona Del Mar, Calif., next to her husband, Ralph Wesley Peterson.
Ruth was born in El Paso, Texas, the daughter of Richard Byron and Lena Laurette Montgomery, and grew to adulthood in Houston, Texas, where she married Ralph W. Peterson on Jan. 20, 1940. They moved to Tulsa, Okla., then Hastings, Neb., and settled in Lincoln, Neb., where they raised their family.
In 1958, the family moved to Kailua, Oahu, Hawaii. Some two years later, they moved back to the mainland and settled in California, living in Rossmoor, Costa Mesa and finally, Newport Beach.
Ruth married at 18 and was widowed at 49, so she spent much of her life as a single person. She had four careers, the first of which was raising three children. After they were grown, Ruth became a licensed practical nurse and worked at Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach, Calif., as a mental health nurse. She once met John Wayne in the halls there, as he was visiting.
Some years later, she earned her real estate license and worked for several years as a Realtor for Walker & Lee in Newport Beach.
After she was widowed, Ruth moved to St. Augustine, Fla., where she lived near her younger daughter, Patricia L. Styring, and her husband, Albert, for some 20 years. While in Florida, Ruth continued her fourth "career," which she had begun in California: She became an artist. Although she did not sell her paintings, Ruth created a large collection of beautiful oils, acrylics and especially water colors.
She was a member of the St. Augustine Art Association, exhibited her watercolors in its shows and served as a docent for the association. In addition, she conducted informal art lessons and group painting sessions in her home for friends who enjoyed painting or wanted to learn to paint.
When she was 80, Ruth moved to Overland Park, Kan., to be near her other daughter, Diane. Her declining health did not allow her to paint, but her lifelong love of little animals, especially dogs and cats, continued and, if anything, grew stronger.
Anna Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Dixie Laurette; her brother, Richard Byron; and her husband, Ralph.
She is survived by her three children, Diane Montgomery Deaton, Belton, Mo., James Eldon Peterson, Calif., and Patricia Lynn Styring, St. Augustine, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Rebecca Lynn Thompson, Leawood, Kan., Anthony Greg Wilson (Lamoura), Columbia, Mo., Wendelle Marie Kor (Joseph), Olathe, Kan., Deborah Ruth Styring, St. Augustine, Fla., Jennifer Lynn Causey (Brad), St. Augustine, Fla., Cynthia Sue Queen, Minnesota, Ryan Peterson and Adam Wesley Peterson, California, and Dustin Peterson, California. She also leaves 12 great-grandchildren, Carinne Marie Trompeter (Joel), Belton, Mo., Kelli Eva Thompson, Overland Park, Kan., Diane Elizabeth Bain (Christopher), Lenexa, Kan., Andrea Caprice Wilson, Lawrence, Kan., Emily Savannah Wilson and Nickolas Wilson, both of Columbia, Mo., Jason Kor, James Kor and Jenna Kor, all of Olathe, Kan., Zachary Causey and Delanie Causey, both of St. Augustine, Fla., and Mary Anna Saige Peterson, California. She also leaves one great-great-granddaughter, Addison Sophia Trompeter, Belton, Mo.
She will be missed by all her family, friends and the little animals she cared so much for all her life.
Arrangements handled by Pacific View Memorial Park, Corona Del Mar, Calif.

Marilyn Anne LaMendola Pius, born on July 14, 1933, passed away on April 21, 2010, at Flagler Hospital.
Cherished and beloved wife of 58 years to Frederic Pius; loving and nurturing mother to her sons, David, Glenn and Chris; and to her "daughters," Jo, Cheri and Christina; loving Nana to Michael, Matthew, Ethan, Hannah, Kiersten, Kaleb, Keegan and Konley; and to another little one that she would have met this November, she has peacefully left this Earthly world and entered into the Kingdom of Heaven, freeing her from the pain and suffering she fought over the last year in a very brave, determined and almost regal fight.
Memorial Mass will be held 9 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anastasia Catholic Church, Father Seamus O'Flynn officiating.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make a donation to The National Kidney Foundation of Florida, kidneyfla.org, 1040 Woodcock Road, Suite 119, Orlando, FL 32083.
Marilyn, born in Queens, N.Y., was the only child of loving parents "Jack" and Dorothy LaMendola and was the light of their lives.
Marilyn brought light into someone else's life at a very young age. At 15, Marilyn met a handsome 17-year-old boy with beautiful wavy hair, Fred. They would marry some four years later, and Marilyn waited for Fred while he was stationed in the Navy during the Korean War.
Marilyn and Fred welcomed a son, David, and, four years later, another son, Glenn. Since the house was a little too quiet with only two boys, they decided to have three - and, 13 years after David's birth, came Christopher.
Marilyn's (and Fred's) greatest source of pride was and always has been her sons and, as they grew, their families. Marilyn's house was always filled with unconditional love and awesome Mother Love. Even all these years later, all of her children have lived no more than minutes from her.
Marilyn worked part-time for Nassau Community College in New York, all while her boys were growing up, so that she could still be there for them when they needed her. She and her husband provided an idyllic childhood for their boys - vacationing every summer, boating every weekend, neighborhood parties and barbecues. Family was always first and foremost with Marilyn.
Marilyn opened up her good heart to the women her sons brought home to be their wives. Marilyn never liked the word "daughter-in-law." It was always DAUGHTER. And Marilyn ALWAYS made her sons' wives feel like her daughters, and the "daughters" always felt like Marilyn was their "other" mother.
Nothing could make Marilyn's face light up faster than a grandchild. Recently Marilyn found out that her youngest son and his wife were expecting their fifth blessing. Marilyn probably had a smile on her face for days with that news.
Matthew, one of Marilyn's grandsons, visited his Nana on the day that she passed. He brought up a special lunch that he'd made for her. When she told us of his visit later that night, you could see the love and light in her face as she spoke of her second grandchild.
She was like that with ALL her grandchildren.
This past March 22, our family got together to celebrate the 58th anniversary of our parents. All the family was there. It was a beautiful day with lots of smiles and laughing and good memories and many, many hugs.
All of us will be forever grateful for that day and for the love and life of Marilyn Anne LaMendola Pius. We will always miss you, and you will always be in our hearts and in our lives. And we know that although our family chain is now broken, one day, we will all be together and the link will rejoin.
We love you Marilyn, Mom and Nana.

The meaning of Grace: 1. a pleasing characteristic or quality 2. good will, mercy 3. divine love 4. a virtue or gift granted by God.
All of the above describe our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.
Mom passed away peacefully on Sept. 20, 2009, surrounded by her loving family and caregivers at her home in St. Augustine, where she had resided for more than 57 years. Born in Mayport, Fla., on Dec. 23, 1921, she was the fifth of six children born to David and Mary Andreu.
Mom married the love of her life, Edward William Pomar Jr., on Aug. 22, 1940, and lovingly proceeded to spoil him for the next 56 years. She also blessed Dad"s life with God"s gift of six devoted children.
Dad was a railroad man and Mom was a stay-at-home mom and wife. Times were hard on a working family man to be able to send all six children to Catholic school. Many sacrifices had to be made, and because of Mom"s strong faith and belief in a Catholic education, she saw the need to help and took in extra children to take care of and nurture.
The many children Mom cared for always knew they were loved and looked after as if they were her own. They fondly called her Mama Grace, and all will agree their lives were richer for having known her love. Anyone who entered Mom"s home was always welcomed, not only with her grace, warmth and Southern hospitality, but also with some of the best home-cooked food she would so generously offer.
Friends and neighbors were as loved by her as she was by them, for she always had a kind word for everyone. She will leave a huge void in the lives of everyone whose life she has touched.
There are not enough words to express our gratitude and thanks to her kind caregivers, June, Stacey and Nancy, and to Hospice of Northeast Florida, especially her nurse Eileen for her loving gentle care.
Also, many thanks to Dr. Batenhorst and his fine staff, especially his nurse, Sandy.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Pomar Jr.; her granddaughter, Tara Mariotti; her brothers, James Andreu, Stoddard Andreu and Pard Andreu; and her sisters, Mary Bennett and Becky Jones.
Survivors include Jim (Bunny) Pomar, Tom (Margo) Pomar, Teresa (David) Mariotti, Lonnie (Barbara) Pomar, Ed Pomar, Becky (Drew) Hesson; 21 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, with the Rev. Father Tom Willis officiating. Burial will be in San Lorenzo Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., with a prayer vigil at 7 p.m., also at Prince of Peace Catholic Church.
