JACUNSKI, Mary Louise Guiteras

Mary Louise Guiteras Jacunksi, who died at home on April 16, 2011, was born on March 13, 1915, in Key West, Fla., the youngest of seven children of Gregorio Maria Guiteras and Maria Hortensia de Aranguren. At the time of her birth, her father was serving in the public health service as the chief surgeon of the Marine Hospital in Key West. Her early years were spent in various places due to her father"s assignments, including another tour in Key West. Upon her father"s retirement they moved to the family home in Matanzas, Cuba, where Mary spent her early teenage years. Although both her parents were members of prominent Cuban revolutionary and literary families, Cuba apparently did not fit in her father"s long-term retirement plans, and he relocated the family to Philadelphia, where he had grown up. Neither of her parents drove, so Mary, then 14, drove the family from Key West to Philadelphia, but that is another story. One of Mary"s older brothers was a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, and, as a result of that connection, two of her sisters married West Point graduates. While visiting one of the sisters, whose husband was stationed at West Point as an instructor, Mary met and ultimately married Edward Walter "Jack" Jacunski, West Point class of 1938. The West Point association continued as Jack, an Army Air Corps pilot, retired after a serious aircraft accident, was recalled to active duty during both World War II and the Korean War to teach in the Military Academy"s Engineering Graphics Department.

Between those assignments, the family moved initially to St. Augustine, Fla., and, ultimately, to Gainesville, which they called home, and Jack rose to become assistant dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Florida. Besides raising three children (her son also attended West Point, and both daughters married career military officers), Mary"s interests included golf, at which she was quite good, horseback riding and frequent visits to family at West Point and Cuba, where her widowed mother had relocated. Mary was active throughout her life in Catholic church activities both at West Point and in Gainesville and ultimately in St. Augustine, where she moved when the locus of the family shifted there in the late "90s. She lived at the Views at Baypointe on Marine Street, about a block from the house the family had lived in on Tremerton Street more than 60 years earlier.

Mary was possessed of a strong personality and a zest for life which infected her children and those around her. Mrs. J., as her children"s friends called her, loved to dance and sing and never would pass up a party. She retained a strong attachment to the United States Military Academy and to Gainesville and the University of Florida. She was a Florida Gator season ticket holder for more than 50 years. Mary was predeceased by her husband in 1986. She is survived by her son, retired Col. George G. Jacunski of St. Augustine; and daughters, Janice C. Corcoran of St. Augustine and Mary L. "Jinx" Travis of St. Petersburg. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Sonia, Sheila and Sandy and the many wonderful friends and neighbors who supported her in her final years. The funeral service will be held at the Cathedral Basilica in Saint Augustine at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 25, 2011. Interment will be at the United States Military Academy cemetery at West Point. Arrangements are under the care of Williams-Thomas Funeral Home Downtown, 404 N, Main St., Gainesville. For further information, Williams-Thomas Downtown (352) 376-7556.

JONES, Dr. Antonia J.

Retired professor emerita Dr. Antonia J. Jones passed away on Dec. 23, 2010, at her home in St. Augustine, Fla., after a brief illness. Antonia retired from the faculty of the University of Cardiff, Wales, UK, in 2007 and moved to St. Augustine to be with her beloved life partner, Barbara Quinn. She had a renowned career as a mathematician, number theorist and computer scientist, and authored more than 70 published academic papers and books on game theory, chaos theory, neural learning, artificial intelligence and computer programming, among many other topics. Antonia was even listed in the credits of the movie "Rosinante" in 1986 as an electronic data processing consultant. During her career, she worked for the University of Nottingham, Yale University, Colorado University, University of London, University of Chicago, New Mexico State University, Cardiff University (from which she retired), the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, Royal Holloway College and Brunel University. She lectured worldwide. She was perhaps most widely known for a scientific research breakthrough, the Gamma Test.

Antonia was born in 1943 at Queen Charlotte"s Hospital, London, the first child of Harold and Kathleen Jones. Her parents had no higher education but were determined that Antonia and her sister, Jenny, would go to college. Despite losing the use of her legs at age 10, she proved to be unstoppable. She graduated from Reading University with first-class honors and went on to receive a doctorate in number theory at the University of Cambridge. Antonia is most fondly remembered by her friends and family as a patient, kind and thoughtful person whose home was always open to stray animals and to humans in need of a meal, a listening ear and non-judgmental advice. This made her home chaotic during those times when "a wheel comes off," as she put it, but she always demonstrated patience and kindness toward others and maintained her dignity to the very end of life. She is survived by her life partner, Barbara Quinn; her sister, Jennifer Christine Carr; and nephews, Robert Carr and Simon Carr. A Celebration of Life is planned from 1-9 p.m. Saturday, May 14, 2011, at the St. Augustine Beach Pier Pavilion. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to Goliath & BeBe"s World or to Saving Animals from Euthanasia (S.A.F.E.).
