He was 85. Mr. Ganzel was born in Quincy, Mass., the oldest child of professional baseball player Foster Pirie and Mildred Ganzel. His father's career carried the family across the country, from Minneapolis to St. Louis to Selma, Ala., finally settling in Sarasota and then Atlantic Beach shortly before the outbreak of World War II. Mr. Ganzel attended Fletcher High School, where among other accomplishments he helped carry the Fletcher football squad to numerous victories in the 1941-42 season. Following Pearl Harbor, he left high school and enlisted in the U.S. Naval Air Force. Sent to the Pacific Theater in 1944 as a mechanic/gunner, Mr. Ganzel also saw combat as a waist gunner on a PB4Y2 patrol bomber in the Philippines. Returning to Florida a few months after the war's end, he finished high school and entered Stetson University, where he studied engineering and also continued honing his skills on the baseball and football fields before transferring to the University of Florida. Mr. Ganzel married Atlantic Beach neighbor and pre-war sweetheart Elizabeth Hooker in 1948. Needing to provide for his new and growing family, he left UF and found work in Jacksonville with the Strachan Shipping Co. in 1950. Mr. Ganzel would work at Strachan until 1986, eventually becoming terminal superintendent of Strachan's operations at Commodore's Point and the Jaxport terminals in Jacksonville. On the docks he was known to the company as a profoundly competent problem-solver, and to the longshoremen as a fair-minded and decent stevedoring superintendent. Leaving Jacksonville in 1972, Mr. Ganzel and his wife built their first home in North Beach on the ocean, residing there until 1985 when they relocated to a marsh-front property on Palm Street. Both of Mr. Ganzel's North Beach homes were designed, executed and decorated by himself and his wife, and showcased his talents in carpentry, woodworking and general craftsmanship. He continued in his love for these skills during his retirement, eventually becoming an accomplished wood-turner, specializing in native Florida woods. A fisherman until his final years, Mr. Ganzel knew well the rivers and creeks of the St. Johns and Duval county marine waterways and helped impart a love of the outdoors to his children and grandchildren. A talented gardener and cook, he and his wife were also eager travelers and enjoyed frequent trips to Appalachia, the Florida Keys and elsewhere during their retirement years. In the early '70s he earned his civilian pilot's license, taking up again the flying he had first learned during the war. Mr. Ganzel was a member of Flagler Memorial Presbyterian Church in St. Augustine. He was also active in the North Shores Improvement Association, serving as its treasurer for several years. After his wife's death, Mr. Ganzel continued to live independently, enjoying nine more years of full and active life until his passing this week. An informal memorial service, led by Rev. J. Dudley Weaver Jr., will be held at the Ganzel home, 4369 Palm St., at 3 p.m. this Sunday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Community Hospice of Northeast Florida. GARRETSON, Michael C.

Michael C. Garretson, 64, passed away at Flagler Hospital while surrounded by his "girls" on June 3, 2010. A dedicated family man, Michael married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Ryan, 41 years ago. Together they raised four daughters, Kristen White of St. Augustine, Megann Schooley of St. Augustine, Ryan Massey of St. Augustine and Erin Garretson of Fort Lauderdale. Known as "Poppy" to his grandchildren, Devin and Morgan Schooley and Emmet White, Michael's dream was to live in St. Augustine full-time to spoil his grandkids. That dream was fulfilled when he retired in January. Known for his big heart, Michael's mission in life was to help people. He touched the hearts and minds of many throughout his life and career. He selflessly shared his knowledge, experience and means with those in need and was a father figure to many. His long and distinguished career in public service began in the Peace Corps; he was a teacher, urban planner, real estate developer and, most recently, the deputy superintendent of schools for Broward County. Although much of his work involved the development of land, he was most interested in the development of the minds, character and integrity of the people around him. No matter what job he held, the consistent theme was his commitment to diversity, equality and humanity. Michael held many titles : educator, chief operating officer and deputy superintendent , but the titles he held most dear were husband, dad, Poppy, brother and friend. The passing of Michael is a devastating loss here on Earth because he inspired greatness in so many. However, we know he is engaging in a great heavenly mission with his Lord Jesus Christ. Michael is survived by his wife, daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren and his sister, Jane Casoria of Fort Lauderdale. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at the St. Anastasia Catholic Church, 5205 A1A South, St. Augustine, FL 32080 at 9 a.m. Friday, June 11, 2010, with a reception immediately following. GRAWET, Joe

Joe Grawet (Oscar Joseph Jr.), 77, passed away peacefully August 3, 2011 in Orlando. As an announcer and producer for WJXT Jacksonville in the 1960s and 1970s, Joe's rich, dulcet voice entered homes daily in the local area. "Brought to you by Mama and Papa Gus" tagged the commercials of Gustafson's Dairy Farm for many years. Joe is preceded in death by parents, Oscar Joseph Grawet Sr. and Clara Woodard Grawet; one sister, Ruth Ryan, all of St. Augustine. He is survived by his loving wife of 22 years, Wanda Wolfe Grawet, originally from St. Augustine, now residing in Orlando; his daughters, Michelle Bartley Vey (Kurt), Clermont, Fla., and Marguerite Whitcomb (Tommy) of St. Augustine; his son, Michael Joseph Grawet (Debbie), of Winter Garden, Fla. Children by marriage include: Rachel Akers (Mark) and Windsor McCulloch (Alex) of Winter Garden and William F. Revere (Donica) of Durham, N.C. Joe's legacy includes 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Joe's radio and TV career spanned almost 25 years, beginning with a student radio show on WFOY while still in high school. While attending the University of Florida, he produced a popular dance music show for radio WGGG, Gainesville. He liked to say the call letters stood for "Where Grawet Greets the Globe." In the late 50's, Joe was "Master Joseph," the local master of ceremonies for Shock Theatre on WESH Daytona, a syndicated late night series of 52 popular horror movies. "Good evening …" That deep voice could make you uneasy and ready to lock your doors. From 1950 to 1961, Joe announced, directed and produced for WESH-TV, Daytona Beach; WQXQ, Radio Ormond; WJHP-TV Jax; WJVB Jax Beach; WGGG, Gainesville; and WFOY, St. Augustine. At WJXT Jax from 1961-1974, Joe announced and produced "The Farm Show," "Midday," sports shows and commercials. Current employee Lani Bassett remembered him as "a witty, nice person who was kind to someone just starting out in the business, and he had a wonderful voice." After a return to school, graduating from the University of North Florida with a BBA and a MBA, Joe started a second career in personnel management. He was the personnel manager for the City of St. Augustine from 1974 to 1981. As an adjunct instructor at St. Johns Community College from 1977 to 1981, he taught business classes and personal finance. For the next 15 years, Joe would be a personnel director in city or county government, including Volusia, Osceola and Lake County.

In 2009, health issues forced Joe to retire from the Florida Division of Motor Vehicles in Kissimmee, where he had worked as an examiner for 11 years. His colleagues loved his wit and knowledge. Joe was an avid University of Florida Gator fan and a sharp-witted pundit about politics. He loved his family, his cats and a lifetime of great memories. His work ethic was unquestionable, and his humor cherished. In his words, "So long-see you later." Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011, at Craig Funeral Home and visitation 5 to 7 p.m Monday at Craig Funeral Home. Interment will follow at San Lorenzo Cemetery.
