FAGUNDO, P. Paul

"Tell it to me in English" was a favorite response from Cuban-born P. Paul Fagundo. Fagundo, who burst on to the St. Augustine scene in 1966 and became involved in just about every organization in St. Johns County, died Thursday morning following heart surgery earlier this week. He was 75. Fagundo and his business partner Jim Donalson settled in St. Augustine Beach, after purchasing the Blue Dolphin Motel. Later they added Surf Crest Cottages to their holdings, and after those two businesses were sold, they continued to live at the beach. Fagundo was a whirlwind of activity involved in everything from Learn to Read to the American Cancer Society. "He was always the cheerful voice in the crowd," City Commissioner George Gardner said. "I knew him quite well. We'd joke around. He was just a wonderful man. ... He was active in the community and heritage which is so dear to my heart. We developed a very strong kinship." In 1999, Faguno joined a list of notables in the Oldest City, when then-Mayor Len Weeks presented him with the de Aviles Award. This city honor is set aside for individuals who have gone above and beyond in the service to their community. As former St. Augustine Record staffer Brian Thompson wrote in an article concerning Fagundo's honor, "It was the kind of turnout City Commission meetings don't usually get. Rather than the empty chairs and scattering of people, on May 24, the St. Augustine Commission chambers overflowed with people filling every available seat, including the ones in the back saved for city staff members.

"The crowd did not turn out to hear the commission debate an issue, but to honor one man, P. Paul Fagundo, who received the de Aviles Award, one of St. Augustine's highest honors." At the time, Weeks joked that "Paul Fagundo can still draw a crowd." "St. Augustine is a much better place for having him here," said Ramelle Petroglou, a friend for 40 years said of Fagundo. "He was one of my best friends. He made the largest contributions to the community of any of our adopted citizens, because of his extreme sense of civic duty." Ronnie Hughes, the retired publisher of the St. Augustine Record, also was a friend of Fagundo and praised him for his strong support of the community. "Paul was no doubt one of St. Augustine's biggest cheerleaders," Hughes said. Among the organizations in which Fagundo was involved was Sister City Committee, of which he was a past president, Learn to Read and St. Gerard House and he was a past president of the Friends of the Library. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Parish. In 1999 Fagundo served on the Florida State Library Council. He was also active in the Father Felix Varela Foundation and Cuban National Heritage Council, and he was instrumental in placement of a permanent exhibit in the Columbus lighthouse in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. The exhibit depicted the Castillo de San Marcos and a timeline of St. Augustine's historic past. A biologist, Fagundo lived in New York City before moving to St. Augustine. He left Cuba Nov. 27, 1954, "B.C.," he once explained. That stood for "before Castro."

A graduate of the University of Havana, he was president of WWF Corp. Other memberships included life member of the New York Academy of Science, American Association for the Advancement of Science, member emeritus of the American Society of Zoologists, United Way vice president, past president of the St. Augustine Beach Civic Association and past president of the Heart Alliance. His other interests were the Whitney Lab, Boy Scouts of America, Osceola District, American Red Cross, EMMA Guild past president, Council on Aging and more, including president of the Friends of St. Cyprian. Survivors include sisters, Haydee Yaniz, St. Augustine, Juana Rosa Fagundo, Esther Fagundo, both of Havana, Cuba; brothers, Ruben Fagundo, Tampa, Raul Fagundo, Miami, Hector Fagundo, Havana; several nieces and nephews including Amehd Fagundo and family Palm Coast; and James Donalson, his longtime business partner and friend. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Craig Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. David Weidner, rector of Trinity Episcopal Church, officiating. Burial will be in San Lorenzo Cemetery. Friends may call at the Craig chapel from 10 a.m. Monday until the hour of services. Flowers are gratefully accepted.

FEDAK, Dian

Dian Fedak, of West Palm Beach and more recently St. Augustine, died May 9, 2009, at Flagler Hospital after a valiant battle with ovarian cancer. She was surrounded by her loving family. Born in Newport, R.I., May 9, 1949, to Kathryn and Walter Fedak, Dian was an outstanding student and creative spirit. She graduated from Riviera Beach High School in 1967, received her Bachelor of Arts from Florida State University in 1971 and her Doctorate of Jurisprudence with honors from Florida State University in 1981. After receiving her law degree, Dian worked for the Florida State Attorney's Office until she began her private practice in family law. Her professional excellence and unquestionable ethics prompted members of the judiciary and the bar to award her an AV (Very High to Preeminent) rating, the highest rating presented to outstanding lawyers. As a teenager, Dian showed an early talent for both clothing and interior design. Her flair remained apparent in her dramatic jewelry, love of textiles, and her artfully crafted home. Many of these items were brought back from trips with family and friends to Europe, the Caribbean, Mexico, New York City, San Francisco, Denver, Las Vegas and North Carolina. She was always planning the next adventure and inviting you along. Although it would be stretching the truth to characterize her as even somewhat athletic, she wholeheartedly embraced skiing, horseback riding, sailing, roller-blading and kayaking, and inevitably had an injury to mark the occasion. An indomitable advocate for civil rights, Dian championed equality and actively supported candidates whose actions reflected her own. She proudly wore buttons, displayed yard signs and drove voters who were unable to drive themselves to their polling places. She also served as a voters' advocate.

The greatest joy in her life remained her daughter, Lauren Elizabeth Fedak, born in August 1992. She delighted in her first words and steps and watched her grow into a resilient and beautiful young woman of whom she was most proud. Dian attributed the ferocity and optimism with which she battled her cancer to her "heart," her daughter, Lauren. Dian is survived by her mother, Kathryn Fedak; her daughter, Lauren; her sister, Karen Bunker (Bill); her brothers, Dennis (Linda), Rick (Kathy), Scott (Holly) and Bob (Cyndee); her nieces, Michelle Curtin, Amanda Fedak, Liza Bunker, Alison Bunker, Sarah Fedak and Katie Fedak; her nephew, Craig Fedak; and two grandnieces, Emma Curtin and Elizabeth Curtin. FORREST, Mary Charlotte

Mary Charlotte Forrest, 88, of St. Augustine, Fla. With deep sadness, we report the loss of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother on Jan. 10, 2011, at the Clyde E. Lassen State Veteran's Nursing Home, St. Augustine, Fla. May's life journey began on July 12, 1922, in Baltimore, Md. She was the youngest of four children, Tom, Bettie and Marie. She was an avid horse rider and jumper in her youth. It was at the horse stable that she met and married her one true love, George. They married April 18, 1941. George went into the Marine Corps, and Mary went on to join the Navy. She served as the first woman Navy Quartermaster on Admiral King's staff during World War II. Mary and George enjoyed a long and devoted marriage for 65 years until George's passing away in 2006. Their lives together took them from Maryland, to Florida, to Norway, back to America and, ultimately, to St. Augustine, where they loved living by the ocean.

They spent much of their life together witnessing for Christ and ministering to young and old. One of Mary's favorite memories was witnessing in the prison outreach ministry. Mary's wish of being able to live amongst her fellow veterans, as she did during World War II, came to fruition when the Clyde Lassen Veteran's Home opened in 2010. She was the eighth resident to join, and it was a great pride to her that she was able to live amongst those who had served their country. She was well thought of and will be missed by her fellow veterans and friends at the veteran's home. Mary was not only our grandmother for the whole Forrest family, but a treasured grandmother for the many people who loved and cared for her.

Mary is survived by her two sons, also veterans, Vaughn and Greg; her seven grandchildren, Eric, Patrick, Rachael, Gavin, Connor, Kathleen and Bevan; and her three great-grandchildren, Tara, Morgan and Katherine. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011, at Craig Funeral Home in St. Augustine. A celebration of Mary's life is being held at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011, at the Anastasia Baptist Church in St. Augustine, with Pastor Walter West officiating. The internment will follow at the Florida National Cemetery. Mary always loved flowers, and the family will gratefully accept them, or a memorial donation may be made to Anastasia Baptist Church.
