BRIGGS, Rita M. (Cramer)

Rita M. (Cramer) Briggs, 86, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2008, under the benevolent and dedicated care of the Moultrie Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born July 25, 1921, in Hempstead, N.Y., the daughter of the late William and Ellen (Noonan) Cramer, and lived all of her life on Long Island, N.Y., before re-locating to St. Augustine in 2000. When she wasn't busy lovingly dedicated to the tender and nurturing care of her husband and children, Rita spent countless hours volunteering her time, talents and energies to a myriad of Christian and people-oriented organizations, both in New York and in St. Augustine. Ironically, while in her early 80s and volunteering her services at the Moultrie Creek Nursing Center, little did she know at the time that she would one day need their services as well. Making sandwiches for the homeless, driving others unable to drive themselves to doctor appointments, assisting teachers with young students and holding the hands of those house-bound while offering an encouraging word, are but a fraction of the many examples that exhibited her loving devotion to help others. Throughout her many years of volunteerism, Rita's deep love for life and her overwhelming compassion to help those less fortunate have served as a loving tribute that we are all put on this earth to love one another and to readily lend a helping hand. Rita is survived by her husband of 64 years, Frederick J. Briggs, of St. Augustine; her children, Ellen, of Farmingville, N.Y., Frederick and his wife, Margaret, of Jacksonville, Charles and his wife, Nalani, of St. Augustine, John and his wife, Suzanne, of Palm City, Fla., Joseph and his wife, Sherry, of Staunton, Va.; as well as 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and her sister-in-law, Marion "Fibber" Cramer, of Edgewater, Fla. In as much as words cannot adequately express the pain and profound sadness her loss has brought to her family, she is at peace now, embraced by God's loving arms, and for this, we are grateful. A deeply religious and loving woman, she will be deeply missed by her family and the numerous friends she made along the way. In loving tribute, a memorial service for her will be held this Sunday, July 13, 2008, at 2 p.m., at St. Johns Family Funeral Home, located at 385 State Road 207 in St. Augustine. Young Arthur came down from the North in the fall, And courted this maiden, the fairest of all. "Team up with me, Flossie," he said very fast, And hands together, they headed northwest. Having grown up with 11 siblings, Marge's heritage is linked with the history of the west. Her mother's people are documented as being among the Cherokees, who were driven west along the Trail of Tears. Having spent all of her growing up years picking cotton, vegetables and harvesting wheat, Marge left her family down on the farm and joined the Air Force in 1954 as an aircraft dispatcher in airport ground control. Duty took her throughout the U.S. and Southeast Asia. Marge came to live in St. Augustine soon after her retirement from the USAF in 1974, and her charity and compassion for others is legendary. For 15 yers, she was caretaker to H(M?)azel Reed, a heart patient and long-time Air Force friend, sho died in 1989. Sisters Elsie Spence, Austin, Texas; Bernice Cruzan, Tuttle, Okla.; and June Johnson, Vienna, Ill.; brother Eugene Buick, Tuttle, Okla.; and many nieces and nephews survive her. You can search this world over, not once, maybe twice, And not find brothers or sisters so nice. With all of their families, a hundred or more, We'll meet you in heaven, on the Golden shore. Marge's brother, Lee Buck, wrote the above verses in 1980 for the annual Buck family reunion, held in Tuttle, Okla.

BUGESKI, Walter

Walter Bugeski, 92, St. Augustine, died at the Community Hospice Bailey Center on July 29, 2011. He was born near Buckner, Ill., on June 13, 1919, the son of Polish immigrants Antoni and Mary Bugajewski. He grew up in Buckner and Christopher, Ill., and developed a keen business sense and strong work ethic at an early age while working in his father's businesses. He was a veteran of World War II, where he served as a link trainer instructor at Selfridge Field, Mich., in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After the war, he attended the University Of Illinois College Of Mechanical Engineering on the G.I. Bill. While at U. of I., he met war widow Adele Genevieve Johns Hannah and her infant daughter, Charlene. On Nov. 27, 1946, the two married and he adopted Charlene. In 1950, daughter Raya was added to the family and they all moved to St. Augustine to be near Adele's family in Hastings, Fla. Walter quickly became totally involved in St. Augustine and worked tirelessly in support of the city. He opened an automotive electrical repair business on San Marco Avenue. In the mid-1950s he could see that power lawn equipment was going to be a big thing, so he began to diversify his automotive shop. He began manufacturing his own line of mowers, ThriftyBoy. In 1964, he was chosen as distributor for North Florida for Snapper mowers (McDonough Power Equipment) with 35 dealers. He continued his involvement in the power lawn equipment business until retirement in 1980.

Walter dreamed of flying in WWII, but it was not until he was in his 50s that he earned his pilot's license and instrument rating. Shortly after, he bought his first of three Mooney aircraft. He flew to Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, in July one year to see the birds and whales and then returned to Churchill that October for polar bears and Eskimos. Another flight took him across the Gulf of Mexico to the Yucatan Peninsula ... he wanted to see the ancient pyramids and culture of the Mayan Indians. He flew his Mooneys back and forth across the U. S. to see friends, family or transact business. Walter was a founding member of the St. Augustine Rod & Gun Club in 1973, serving as president in 1980. In 1992, Walter received the de Aviles Award from the City of St. Augustine in recognition of his many years of service to the people of St. Augustine. He served as a city commissioner from 1956 to 1961, mayor in 1958-1959 and on the Civil Service Board from 1972 until 1992. In 1986, he was elected to the Airport Authority and served as chairman in 1989. He never stopped being interested in, informed about and involved in St. Augustine. City Hall saw him often!

He stayed active until late in life, journeying to Poland in 1993 to visit the villages and towns of his ancestors. In Dziektarzewo, Poland, about an hour outside Warsaw, he found relatives and enjoyed tea and conversation with them. He went to Poland to see why his parents had been such determined, hard-working people, happy people, and he understood after that trip what hope America had offered to them and to their children. In the book Walter wrote for his immediate and extended family, he wrote: "I have already lived the American Dream … I actually have done and seen much more than I ever expected and had a ball doing it ... Hope to make it to 90, then I'll check out with no regrets." And he did accomplish it all. Walter was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church for more than 50 years and served as chairman of the Board of Trustees and on the Administrative Council.

Walter is survived by his two daughters and sons-in-law, Charlene (Bugeski) and Douglas Bunnell of Midland, Texas, and St. Augustine, and Raya (Bugeski) and Neill McArthur of Jacksonville; three grandchildren, Alyson (Bunnell) and husband David Miller of Lakeland, Fla., Ashley (Bunnell) and husband Christopher Livingston of Dallas, Texas, and Wade McArthur of Jacksonville; and five great-grandchildren, Hannah, Katherine and Elizabeth Miller of Lakeland and Schuyler and Zachary Livingston of Dallas. Numerous cousins, nieces and nephews also survive him. He is predeceased by his wife of almost 65 years, Adele Johns Bugeski, in January of this year; his parents, Andy and Mary Bugajewski, his infant daughter, Susanne; and his six brothers and sisters. A private interment with military honors was held on Aug. 5, 2011. Those wishing to make a memorial donation, please make it to The City of St. Augustine/ 450th Celebration, c/o Wanda Bray, P.O. BUTCHER, Jo-Anne M.

Jo-Anne M. Butcher, 76, passed away during the early morning of June 19, 2009. At this time she was undergoing rehabilitation therapy at a hospital in Green Cove Springs. Early Friday morning she started experiencing critical health problems and passed away a short time later. Our loving mother was born in St. Augustine on September 10, 1932. She was the only child of parents Telano H. Mance and Estelle Colee. After graduating from St. Joseph Academy as an honor student, she married Bill Evans, now deceased, and bore him her first three children while also maintaining employment as executive administrative secretary for The St. Augustine Record. She continued her employment after a divorce and simultaneously raised three children as a single parent. Because of her limited income, our mother always chose to unselfishly put aside her own desires and needs so that, if there was any extra money available after paying the bills, it was spent on her children. Looking back on those financially troubled times, she must have given up a lot to provide toys for her children on Christmas Day. Our mother later met and married Carmen Butcher. She also started a new job as an executive secretary for the directorate of administration for the Department of Military Affairs and held that job until her retirement 38 years later. During this time she and Carmen, now deceased, had two additional children, thus giving us three boys an additional brother and a sister. We should also note at this time that our mother's longtime wish was fulfilled when our sister was born. Even now, we kids know our mom as a loving and caring mother who would not hesitate to do anything and everything for her family and friends. Over the years she has made herself responsible for the care of many of our elderly relatives. It seems for most of her life she put her needs aside so that she could be available to care for others. Whether it was driving them to a doctor's appointment, buying groceries or just visiting to lift their spirits, for so many people it was our mother that they depended upon when they needed help and as a friend. After our mother's retirement and while still committed to helping others, she started a new career as a loving grandmother to all of her grandchildren. Although much of her time was spent caring for others, she never complained and always looked forward to visiting with or watching over her grandchildren. Jo-Anne was raised as a Catholic and attended San Sebastian Church from the time it was constructed. Previously, even when our mother's health problems limited her movement and ability to get around, she did enjoy an occasional game of bingo. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and was a longtime resident of South Florida, including Pompano Beach, Ft. Lauderdale, Plantation and Boca Raton before moving to St. Augustine in 2004. Mary moved with her family from Cleveland to Pompano Beach in 1958. She graduated from Pompano Beach High School and attended Stetson University. Outside of family and friends, Mary's passions were music, art, travel and food. Her ability to find inherent value and achievement in a song, an artist, a place in this world or even another human being was her trademark and a gift she shared with others. In the workplace, Mary was a dedicated employee and leader as shown by more than 20 years of integral activity at the Ft. Lauderdale Eye Institute, where she was office administrator of one of the largest ophthalmology practices in South Florida. In St. Augustine, Mary assumed the office administrator role for St. Johns County Housing and Community Services for the past three years and was recognized posthumously for her work with the Housing and Finance Authority. Mary's greatest personal satisfaction was derived from her dedicated service as a Jehovah's Witness. For 34 years, Mary's active involvement in congregations in South Florida and eventually St. Augustine led to an inner fulfillment and complete faith in Jehovah God that guided her life and comforted her during difficult physical times. As a wife, mother, sibling, homemaker and friend, Mary led by example with dedication to the values she strongly adhered to for her own life. Through a marriage that grew in love and devotion with each year, a son that reflects and nurtures everything his mother instilled, brothers and sisters that grew under her matriarchal love and friends that felt a sense of belonging to her wonderful life, Mary will continue to be here for us whenever we need. Mary is survived by her husband of 39 years, Mike Butler, of St. Augustine; her son, John Butler, of Boca Raton, Fla.; sisters, Patty Smoot, of St. Petersburg, Fla., Fran Wood, of Malabar, Fla.; brothers, Marty Muldoon, of Delray Beach, Fla., and Louis Muldoon of Tampa, Fla.
