Wallace is survived by Margie Cann Mussallem, his wife, and Eddy Mussallem, his brother, and numerous loving cousins, nephews and nieces. His broad network of loving relatives and dear friends spans the St. Augustine community and this great country. Wallace touched the lives of so many, but especially his cousin Dr. Anthony Mussallem and niece Alice Mattox. The eldest son of immigrants Abraham and Olga Mussallem, Wallace (known to his friends as "Wally") displayed both academic and physical skill at an early age. An athlete and sportsman throughout his life, Wally was nicknamed "the Galloping Ghost" in high school for his prowess on the football field at St. Joseph's Academy. He enrolled and attended the University of Florida until world events required his generation's sacrifice. When his country called, this citizen-soldier went, and served with valor and distinction. As an officer in the Army's 20th Air Force, 330th bomb group, Wally flew on twenty-six harrowing B-29 bomber missions in the Pacific Theater, earning a Purple Heart and Air Medal, and volunteered for an extended tour when given the opportunity to return home. On one mission, after sustaining a direct flak hit over Japan, his plane lost its pilot and all instruments. The heroic actions of both Wally and his crewmates (chronicled in "The Boston Herald" contemporaneously and in numerous other publications over the years) nursed their stricken plane back to the recently hard-won island of Iwo Jima, where all surviving crew were able to bail out safely. Fate had other plans for Wally. This hero returned home and immediately meshed into the fabric of the St. Augustine community. Joining his fellow veteran and brother Eddy as an entrepreneur and steward of a great family tradition, Wally co-managed the Alhambra Hotel and managed the famous Zorayda Castle, which houses the family's collection of worldly treasures. He opened the "Briny Deep" restaurant which became a draw for the community's lovers of great food and great people a restaurant serving portions the size of its proprietor's heart. Along the way, one beautiful guest of the Alhambra Hotel caught his eye. "God made you for me" is etched in granite on Wally's marker in San Lorenzo Cemetery. Although first spoken by Wally over 50 years ago to his sweetheart while they drifted along the sun-drenched St. John's River, it is an epitaph whose author could have been any of the witnesses to Margie and Wally's love and affection over the years. These settings changed during 60 years of marriage whether competing at the country club, working side by side at the Zorayda Castle, dining on a cruise ship junket, bidding around a bridge table, or hosting family at Disney World but the result was always the same. Together they were always developing lifelong friendships, influencing lives for the better, and fostering a marriage based on love, mutual interest and respect. When interviewed by the local Compass newspaper at the age of 71, Wally remarked, "The best idea I ever had was getting married." A founding member of San Marco Tennis Club, active member of both the Ponce DeLeon and Sawgrass Country Clubs, and avid fisherman, Wally reflected this state's high regard for physical pursuits and affection for the outdoors. A dedicated life-long member of the St. Augustine business community, Wally always found ways to give generously to the place he loved, including his work with the Knights of Columbus. As a proud member of the Chamber of Commerce and SKAL International club, Wally and other civic and business leaders sought greater awareness of and interaction among Florida's finest tourist attractions. Gaining widespread attention in a close-knit community of sharp bridge players and founding the St. Augustine Duplicate Bridge Club, Wally achieved Silver Life Master status for his performance in tournament bridge a satisfying past-time and a pursuit of excellence in his life. Wally's love for athletics, fishing, travel, and card games fostered a wonderful competitiveness and camaraderie among his many friends. Wally, your infectious enthusiasm for life will be missed. Your legacy of integrity and service will endure. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. in Cathedral-Basilica of St. Augustine, 38 Cathedral Place, St. Augustine, FL 32084.
