| HACK, Alfred Thomas Alfred Thomas Hack, 79, of St. Augustine, died April 16, 2008, at his home. A native of New York, N.Y., he had been a former New York City police officer and business owner. He had lived in St. Augustine for the past 13 years. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of St. Anastasia Catholic Church. HAIRE, Joel Joel (Ray) Haire, 67, of St. Augustine, passed away and went to be with the Lord, March 10, 2008. He was married to his wife Nellie for 45 wonderful years. He retired from Rayonier Forestry Resources in Bunnell, Fla. in 2006. He was preceded in death by his father, Luther Haire and mother, Golden Haire, also a brother, Winifred Haire. He leaves behind his wife, Nellie, St. Augustine; one sister, Pat Looney (John), Sevierville, Tenn., and brothers, James Haire (Mary Ann), Larry Haire (Harriet), both of St. Augustine, and Emory Haire (Karen), Palatka. He was a native of Forkland, Ala., grew up in Niagara Falls, N.Y., and lived in St. Johns County during the winter months since 2003. He was a former fighter pilot of the U.S. Air Force who retired as a lieutenant colonel. He later flew aircraft for Pan American Airlines and the Royal Armenian Airline. (St Augustine Record, 2/28/08) ______________________________________________________________________ HANCOCK, Willa Mae "Coonie" Willa Mae "Coonie" Hancock passed away peacefully in the early hours of Sunday, June 15, 2008, at the age of 93 after living a full and active life. Born on June 5, 1915, in Louisiana, Coonie was one of five children born to William and Urina Herring. The family moved to the Palatka area in the 1920s where she met her husband of more than 50 years, R. Wendell Hancock, until his passing in 1988. While residing in Palatka, Coonie was a member of the United Methodist Church. She also had many interests such as interior design, fashion, women's clubs and traveling with her husband. Coonie was also involved in her children's school activities, as she was the president of the Parent Teacher Association. Gardening, however, was her biggest passion. She was an active member of the garden club, frequently judged flower shows around the state of Florida and even hosted her own radio talk show dedicated to gardening. When Coonie was not busy with her activities in Palatka, she and her late husband spent their time relaxing at their Crescent Beach condo. After the passing of Wendell, Coonie made their beach getaway her permanent residence. She is survived by her son, Adrian and (Charlotte) Hancock; and daughter, Ginger and (Hollis) Tinsley. Grandchildren include Kendell Hancock, Kris and (Anita) Hancock, Kevon (and Ken) Heyser, KanDee (and Gary) Bacon, Tippi (and Jeff) Ruby, and Tyson (and Jennifer) Tinsley; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. The St. Augustine native lived in Putnam County for most of his life. For the past 20 years, he lived in San Mateo, where since 1988, he owned and operated Harris Spreader Service in San Mateo. He was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church and for the past several years had coached several traveling softball teams. He was a devoted husband and father and loved his family very much. He loved all sports, and was especially interested in seeing the playing skills develop with the young people he coached. (St Augustine Record, 12/06/07) ______________________________________________________________________ HART, Rogers Edward Rogers Edward Hart, 78, of East Palatka, died Saturday March 15, 2008 at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine. He was born in 1929 in Aurora, Ill., and served his country as first lieutenant in the 101st Airborne Division during the Korean War. After his service in the Army, Rog and his brother founded a galvanizing plant near Pittsburg. It was there that he met and married Gail, the love of his life. Moving his family back to Illinois, Rog moved on to a position as president of a company that sold grain unloading equipment internationally to Third World countries. Opening a branch location of this company, Rog moved the family to the Jacksonville area in 1979. In his later years, during retirement, he was a director of a food testing laboratory in Gainesville, Fla. He was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Elkton and a member of the Palatka Yacht Club. Rog and Gail enjoyed many years of boating in the Bahamas and elsewhere. He was an avid reader, a student of life, a world traveler and an exceptional family man. His "bucket list" ended before he did. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Gail Schaub Hart of East Palatka; son, Paul and wife, Joanne of Grapevine, Texas; daughters, Stacey Hart and Heather Hart Studwell and husband, John, all of St. Augustine; seven grandchildren; and three nephews. Mrs. Harty was a native of Fresno, Calif., and had resided in Italy, Germany and England before moving to Florida in 1954. Mrs. Harty had lived in Tampa, Odessa, St. Petersburg and Ponte Vedra Beach before moving to St. Augustine. She lived as an artist and was a member of the St. Augustine Garden Circle, past president of the Ponte Vedra Garden Circle, won the State and Deep South Award for Highway Beautification in 1989 for planting 100 pounds of wild flower seeds in 18 different varieties along a five-mile stretch of the median on A1A. She was of the Catholic faith and was a member of the Cathedral and St. Anastasia Parishes. Services: Private and no memorial service is planned. Survivors: Her husband, Col. Gerald A. (St Augustine Record, 4/25/08) __________________________________________________________________________________________________ HASTY, Lorna Walters Lorna Walters Hasty, 88, of St. Augustine, died peacefully on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2007 at Flagler Hospital. Lorna was born on Sept. 26, 1919 on a farm in Hazlehurst, Ga. She proudly hailed from a family of 12 brothers and sisters. After completing her education in the Hazlehurst schools, she moved to Jacksonville, Fla., to find employment at the Jacksonville Airport. It was in Jacksonville that she met Clyde Hasty who had just been discharged from the Army. They were married on Dec. 13, 1942. He was her husband and loving companion for the next 60 years until his death in 2003. The Hasty's moved to St. Augustine from Jacksonville in 1954. Mrs. Hasty worked alongside her husband in a number of business enterprises, including The Polar Water and Beverage Co., Grapette Bottling Co., the Liberty Motel, and Hasty Carpet Company. She was a founding member of Anastasia Baptist Church and was actively involved in the church. She was a member of the Fideles Sunday School class and constantly reached out to help others. In her later years she took great pride and an active role in the Church Grief Group, helping others adjust to life without their life partner. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007 at Anastasia Baptist Church, The Rev. Ron Moore, officiating. She was born in Coral Gables, Fla., on June 20, 1956. She and her family lived in St. Augustine for several years before moving to Jacksonville. Donna was a loving, caring wife, mother and friend who will be truly missed by all who knew her. She was married to her beloved husband, Bruce Kevin Hazen, for 25 years. Donna was employed by Nuvell Financial for several years. She will be missed by a host of friends and family. Hebberd, 92, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2008, in the presence of his loving wife, Grace, of 67 years. Nate was born in Bradford, Maine, to Harold C. and Myrtle Ingraham Hebberd on March 6, 1916. He lived and grew up in Dexter. He graduated from high school in Dexter, Maine, and from Husson College in Bangor, Maine, with a business degree. He entered the Maine Army National Guard in 1936 as an enlisted infantry soldier. He entered World War II as a non-commissioned officer and received a battlefield promotion to finish the war as a commissioned officer. He fought in the Pacific in the 43rd Infantry Division and specifically the 103rd Infantry Regiment. After the war, he returned to Maine to live and raise his family. He continued to serve in the Maine Army National Guard for many years with increasing responsibilities, eventually serving full time and retiring as the State Logistics Officer as a colonel in 1976. Nate and Grace started commuting between Maine and Florida in 1977, eventually moving full time to Clearwater, Fla., in 1992 to enjoy new friends, the activities at Hillcrest and the sunshine. They were very active in their Hillcrest Community, enjoying shuffling, running the small garage sale shop with his friends and serving as the first president of the homeowners association. Nate and Grace have two children, their son, Nate Jr., who died as a child, and their daughter, Dawn Hebberd Murati. Dawn is married to George Murati, and they live in St. Augustine. Besides his wife and daughter, he is survived by two grandsons, James Murati, of Titusville, Fla., and Nathan "Andy" Murati, of Austin, Texas. He was very proud of them and lavished them with love. Andy is married to Courtney Schoolcraft Murati. He was absolutely thrilled when, in September 2006, his great-granddaughter, Elyssa Grace Murati, was born to Andy and Courtney. The family celebrated Nate and Grace's 67th wedding anniversary on Dec. 21, 2007, in Clearwater with their entire family present. Nate was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Nate will be cremated and buried in the Corinthian Cemetery in East Corinth, Maine, in the family plot. Services will be conducted at a later date. Held, 88, of Fort Lauderdale and St. Augustine, passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on May 17, 2008, in St. Augustine, Fla. Dee was born in Chicago, Ill., graduated from Trinity High School and attended Rosary College. She moved to Ft. Lauderdale in 1966, where, along with her husband Bob, they raised their eight children. Dee was a wonderful, caring and loving mother whose kindness and generosity surrounded her throughout her life. Dee was a devout Catholic and a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fort Lauderdale, and co-founder of Bodee Development Corp. Henkels, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 8, 2008, at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg, Va. Born on a farm in South Dakota, Aug. 22, 1910, she taught school in a one-room school house, moved to Sioux City, Iowa, to work for the State Traffic Department and in 1940 married Cecil W. Henkels, who preceded her in death. Throughout married life, they traveled the world over. For many years she was the head of the volunteers for American Red Cross in White Plains, N.Y. After moving to St. Augustine, she became a life member of the Friends of the Library; belonged to the GFWC Women's Club of St. Augustine, a book club, the EMMA Guild and loved to play bridge. She was a devoted wife of 51 years to George William Hill and a loving mother to her four children: Helene, Thomas, Christopher and George. Her 13 grandchildren remember her as "Nana." Everyone else remembers her simply as a friend. Whether she was teaching lessons in a classroom or giving "monkey bites" and "steam rolls" to her grandchildren, Carol touched us all. Born in Detroit, Carol moved to south Florida in 1946, achieving academic honors at Miami-Jackson Senior High. She received a rare five-year music scholarship from the University of Miami where she earned a Bachelor's degree in education, later earning a Master's degree from FIU. Carol taught in the Miami-Dade County School District for more than 30 years inspiring countless students. Her innovative approach to reading education inspired new curricula from Miami to London. In 1997, Carol retired and moved with George to St. Augustine, She was a regular at the local art galleries, unique gift shops and quaint restaurants. She was an active member of St. Anastasia Catholic Church where she attended mass and Adoration weekly. Carol loved entertaining and would always welcome anyone in her home. She loved to play piano, watch old movies, study English history and play cards. "Deuces Clifford" enjoyed knitting blankets for everyone and writing short stories for her grandchildren. Most of all, she celebrated life and we ask all to celebrate hers with us today. Her legacy is simple: to hold the ones you love for another second, forgive everyone who has hurt you, and live like it's heaven on earth. Mr. Hill was a retired engineer for IBM and was a graduate of Vanderbilt University in 1949. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre where he was part of the assault and occupation of Iwo Jima. He received the American Theatre Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal and two commendations for performance of duty. He was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church in St. Augustine. He had been a millwright by the former Hudson Pulp & Paper and had retired in 1974 following 25 years of service. He also was a commercial fisherman but his real love was country music. His musical career encompassed 62 years and led him to radio, television and the B. M. I. Awards. He started out playing with Bill Monroe and appeared with Patsy Kline, Hank Williams Sr., Ray Charles, Mel Tillis, Merle Haggard along with other country music singers. He had a radio show on WFOY. He was known for his fiddle and bass fiddle playing. He had written country songs for more than 35 years with B.M.I. along with his son, Kim. He was of the Baptist faith. She was born in Spartanburg, S.C., on Oct. 25, 1918, to W. Herbert and Maude Lee (Barnett) Burrell. She became a mill worker at the age of 9 in Easley, S.C. She went to work for Trojan Explosives in Sandusky, Ohio, in 1944. After World War II, she was one of the original employees of New Departure Division of General Motors in Sandusky. She retired in 1970. She was a former member of the Ladies of the Moose, Eastern Star, Ladies of the Nile and a Gray Lady at Sandusky Memorial Hospital. Ruby and Ray Hoghe were instrumental in establishing and building Peoples Church in Sandusky in the 1960s. She retired to Clearwater in 1972 till 1990. She returned to Sandusky and joined Victory Temple. As a volunteer at Victory Kitchen, she spread love and friendliness to all. She transported friends to doctors, treatments and shopping. She never could say the word, NO. In 2002, she moved to St. Augustine to live out her life with her daughter due to blindness. She became a volunteer sitter and great supporter of St. Gerard Campus, a school and home for unwed mothers. She loved those babies as her own family. She became active in pro-life activities, participating in Life Chains and Walk for Life. Her greatest accomplishment is the legacy she leaves in her family where she is greatly loved and esteemed. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Raymond Hoghe, Paul Lesley and Sylvester McCall; sons, Terry Hoghe, Talmadge McCall and Jack Lesley; brothers, Elbert Burrell and Albert Turner; and a sister, Effie Posey. Mrs. Hoghe is survived by her daughters, Ruth Mallett (Richard) of St. Augustine, Jaunita Arwood of Sandusky, and Bonita Holly (George) of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and locally, granddaughters, Ann Medlin, St. Augustine, and Sandra Rekau (Michael) Jacksonville, Fla.; grandsons, Raymond Kidwell (Jennifer) Jacksonville, Fla., and Richard Mallett of Sanderson, Fla. Holden, 75, a Navy veteran of the Korean War, died Saturday, June 14, at Mass General Hospital, following a brief illness. He was the husband of Elizabeth A. (Fox) Holden, who died in 1995. He was born in Aberdeen, Md., on Feb. 21, 1933, a son of the late Howard and Dorothy (Francis) Holden. He was raised in Maryland and graduated from the Hargrave Military Academy. He entered into the Navy and served honorably aboard the USS Cogswell during the Korean War. Upon discharge, he married his beloved "Betty" and moved to Boston. He then moved his family to Tewksbury in 1955, where he remained until 1998 when he relocated to St. Augustine. Missing his family, he returned home to Tewksbury in 2006. He retired from the Ironworkers, Local #351 in Lawrence. He was an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed all the professional Boston sports teams. He spent many summers aboard his boat named the HoldenOn. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Gregory and Eleanor (Milner) Holden of Windham, Maine; two daughters and a son-in-law, Linda L. McAvoy, R.N., and her husband, Edward, of Tewksbury; and Elizabeth A. Don was born July 22, 1948, in Fort Bliss, Texas, to Master Sgt. James C Hooker. Sr and Eddie Lou Norton Hooker. As an "Army brat," he lived in many places, including Japan and Cape Cod, Mass. Following graduation from St. Augustine High School in 1967, Don worked as a diver and announcer at Marineland before studying history and public relations at Flagler College and the University of North Florida. Utilizing his love for history and gift for storytelling, he worked as a park ranger for the National Park Service specializing in living history programs, historical interpretations and resource management. Don moved back to St. Augustine in 1988 to be closer to family and worked as a guide at the St. Augustine Lighthouse. In 1994, Don moved to Trenton, Fla., where he worked as a correctional officer for Lancaster C.I., and later for the Levy Co. Sheriff's Office. "Hooker," as he was known, loved people and a good joke as well as anyone. He shared his love freely with his family, friends and favorite waitresses at the local restaurants. He is survived by his brothers, Jim Hooker, of Trenton, and Ronny Hooker, of St. Augustine; two sisters-in-law; two aunts; five cousins; two nieces; three nephews; and eleven great-nieces and great-nephews. (St Augustine Record, 06/26/08) _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ HOOPER, Christopher Allen Christopher Allen Hooper, of Smithville, Tenn., was killed in an automobile accident Thursday, July 10, 2008, just outside Manchester, Tenn., while driving home from visiting family and friends in St. Augustine over the Fourth of July week. Christopher was born in Overland Park, Kan., on Oct. 8, 1983. He attended Knight Elementary School and Five Forks Middle School in Gwinnett County, Ga. He then moved to St. Augustine in 1995 with his mother, Carol Hooper, where he attended Sebastian Middle School and St. Augustine High School. He attended St. Johns Community College, where he completed the Police Academy program to pursue his childhood dream of becoming an officer. Chris had finished the application process for the City of Chattanooga in Tennessee. He was scheduled for a final panel interview on July 16 to be offered a position. Chris was also a member of the Tennessee National Guard in Lebanon, Tenn., where he served as a military policeman. Part of his duties included guarding the international border between the U.S. and Mexico. Services were held in Smithville on Saturday, July 12, 2008, where he was given full military honors. He moved to St. Augustine in 1989 and was most recently employed at San Sebastian Winery. Barry was an avid music fan, whose tastes ranged from rock 'n' roll to classical. He enjoyed football, auto racing and barbecuing at family gatherings. She was born in Purcellville, Va., in 1924, where she spent her childhood on a farm before moving to Arlington, Va., after graduation. Evelyn worked for the D.C. Transit Co. and became active with the USO during World War II. In 1952 she married Jack Howell, at which time she began her journey through life as an Army wife. Evelyn enjoyed the experiences of living in such places as Germany, Texas and Japan before settling in St. Augustine in 1968. She retired in 1985 from her position as secretary for the principal of Adult Education at First Coast Technical College (formerly St. Augustine Technical Center). She was an avid bowler and was constantly involved in bowling leagues for more than 60 years; this came to a halt at age 82, due to the effects of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Evelyn was preceded in death by her loving husband, MSgt. Jack Howell, in 1985. She was also predeceased by her parents, Anna Marie and Clem Longerbeam, as well as both of her siblings, Elizabeth Lanham and Curtis Longerbeam. Evelyn (affectionately known as Gi-Gi) is survived by her daughter, Jacque Alderman; granddaughter, Jennifer Tibbs and husband Dustin; and great-grandchildren, Taegen and Zoey Tibbs. "Bill" Huck, of St. Augustine, passed away July 10, 2008, at the Earl B. Hadlow Center in Jacksonville. Mr. Huck was born on Dec. 26, 1935, in Fond du Lac, Wis. to Arnold and Louise Huck. On May 11, 1957, he married his high school sweetheart, Mary Helen Wirtz. They had five children. He was of the Catholic faith. Bill began his career in Fond du Lac as head of photography for E.C. Kiekhaefer Corp., manufacturer of outboard motors. In 1966, he and his family moved to St. Augustine, where he assumed the position as director of photography for Marineland of Florida. He also served as production manager and sometimes camera man for the Murray Lerner 3-D production, "Sea Dream," which became part of the Marineland attraction in 1978 and was shown several times daily in a specially constructed movie theater on the Marineland grounds. Later, Bill served as public relations director for the attraction and oversaw the daily operations of the Dolphin Restaurant. He subsequently became general manager of the Quality Inn at Marineland, earning certification in hotel management. Bill retired from Marineland in 1993, after which he was involved in North Florida Restaurant Supply, which closed in 2002. Bill is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mary; his daughters, Cathy Ivory (Reg), of Johnson City, Tenn., and Cindy Sikes (Robert) of St. Augustine; four grandchildren and one great-grandaughter. She enjoyed working as a Toll Booth Operator on Ocean Trace Road and A Street. She loved her family and friends, playing with her dogs, playing the piano, singing, laughing, taking care of those around her, and walking on the beach. She never met a stranger and God blessed her with incredible strength and courage. She was a true follower of Christ and this is why we will celebrate her life on earth as well as her entry into the Heavenly Kingdom. (St Augustine Record, 06/25/08) ______________________________________________________________________________________________ HYMAN, Ann Dye Ann Dye Hyman, 72, died May 19, 2008, in Jacksonville. She was originally from Bradenton, Fla., but has been a longtime resident of Jacksonville. Mrs. Hyman was an accomplished writer and the author of three published books. She was a reporter, columnist, editor and writer during her tenure at the Florida Times-Union from 1977 until her retirement in 2001. She covered many news and feature subjects, but she specialized in the arts, including music, theater and literature. Mrs. Hyman was a member of Riverside Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Hyman, and a daughter, Elizabeth Dye Hyman. Survivors include her son, Joseph Hyman, and grandchildren, Jessica Ann and Joseph Henry Hyman. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. May 23, 2008, at Riverside Baptist Church, 2650 Park St., (corner of Park and King streets) with The Rev. Dave Holladay officiating. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hubbard House, the Jacksonville Humane Society, or Riverside Baptist Church.
