Born May 29, 1909, in Ansonville, N.C., she was the middle of five children born to Marianna Waddell and Robert Lee Staton. She graduated from Quincy High School and moved to Jacksonville to study at Massey Business College. But when Augustus Daniel Bell, the love of her life, asked her to marry him, she quit school and that put an end to her business career. They had three daughters, Augusta Wright, Delores Hiers and Sarah Wood Hunt. A Christian role model for her children and all who knew her, her testimony was her ever-present smile and loving concern for others. When she was widowed at age 52, with a 15-year-old to finish raising, she got a job in retail, selling women's fashions for the Vogue Shops. Every customer who came through the door was a visitor to socialize with and many became life-long friends. Her winning personality was the key to her success. She was often named top salesperson in the chain during her 30-plus-year career. Beginning at the then-new Gateway Mall, then at Phillips Highway Mall, she worked until retirement at age 80. She then had the opportunity to return to her first love -- caring for her family and gardening. She was predeceased by her parents; brother Robert Nelm Staton; sisters Marie Staton, Virginia Bowen and Bess Akins; and never knew of the death of her precious daughter Delores, just weeks prior to her own. She is survived and terribly missed by her daughters, Augusta Wright, of Middleburg, and Sarah Wood Hunt (Jon), of St. Augustine and son-in-law H. Marcy Hiers, of Kannapolis, N.C. She was devoted to her grandchildren, Clabourne Wright III (Debbie), of Green Cove Springs, Augustus Daniel Wright (Cathy), of Middleburg, Ruth Ann Sumner (Rod), of Jacksonville, Robert Hiers (Cheryl), of Aynor, S,C., Marcie Lee Pack, of Kannapolis, Kathy Young of Savannah, Ga., Walter Wood (Carrie), of Satellite Beach, Cameron Ward-Hunt, of Denver, Colo., and Cassidy Hunt, of St. Augustine. Her great-grandchildren are Melissa, Austin, Clay and Conner Wright; McGee Faircloth; Jacob Hiers; Alec Pack; Derek and Katie Tarver; Jamie Lee; and Walker Wood. Her great-great-granddaughters are Amaya Jennings and Sidni and Brooke Rabon. She loved her nieces and nephews as her own. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Hardage-Giddens on Hendricks Avenue in Jacksonville. (Cramer) Briggs, 86, passed away peacefully on July 8, 2008, under the benevolent and dedicated care of the Moultrie Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born July 25, 1921, in Hempstead, N.Y., the daughter of the late William and Ellen (Noonan) Cramer, and lived all of her life on Long Island, N.Y., before re-locating to St. Augustine in 2000. When she wasn't busy lovingly dedicated to the tender and nurturing care of her husband and children, Rita spent countless hours volunteering her time, talents and energies to a myriad of Christian and people-oriented organizations, both in New York and in St. Augustine. Ironically, while in her early 80s and volunteering her services at the Moultrie Creek Nursing Center, little did she know at the time that she would one day need their services as well. Making sandwiches for the homeless, driving others unable to drive themselves to doctor appointments, assisting teachers with young students and holding the hands of those house-bound while offering an encouraging word, are but a fraction of the many examples that exhibited her loving devotion to help others. Throughout her many years of volunteerism, Rita's deep love for life and her overwhelming compassion to help those less fortunate have served as a loving tribute that we are all put on this earth to love one another and to readily lend a helping hand. Rita is survived by her husband of 64 years, Frederick J. Briggs, of St. Augustine; her children, Ellen, of Farmingville, N.Y., Frederick and his wife, Margaret, of Jacksonville, Charles and his wife, Nalani, of St. Augustine, John and his wife, Suzanne, of Palm City, Fla., Joseph and his wife, Sherry, of Staunton, Va.; as well as 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and her sister-in-law, Marion "Fibber" Cramer, of Edgewater, Fla. In as much as words cannot adequately express the pain and profound sadness her loss has brought to her family, she is at peace now, embraced by God's loving arms, and for this, we are grateful. A deeply religious and loving woman, she will be deeply missed by her family and the numerous friends she made along the way. In loving tribute, a memorial service for her will be held this Sunday, July 13, 2008, at 2 p.m., at St. Johns Family Funeral Home, located at 385 State Road 207 in St. Augustine. For directions, please call 824-1625. (St Augustine Record, 07/11/08) _________________________________________________________________________________________________ BRODEUR, Virginia O. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and was a longtime resident of South Florida, including Pompano Beach, Ft. Lauderdale, Plantation and Boca Raton before moving to St. Augustine in 2004. Mary moved with her family from Cleveland to Pompano Beach in 1958. She graduated from Pompano Beach High School and attended Stetson University. Outside of family and friends, Mary's passions were music, art, travel and food. Her ability to find inherent value and achievement in a song, an artist, a place in this world or even another human being was her trademark and a gift she shared with others. In the workplace, Mary was a dedicated employee and leader as shown by more than 20 years of integral activity at the Ft. Lauderdale Eye Institute, where she was office administrator of one of the largest ophthalmology practices in South Florida. In St. Augustine, Mary assumed the office administrator role for St. Johns County Housing and Community Services for the past three years and was recognized posthumously for her work with the Housing and Finance Authority. Mary's greatest personal satisfaction was derived from her dedicated service as a Jehovah's Witness. For 34 years, Mary's active involvement in congregations in South Florida and eventually St. Augustine led to an inner fulfillment and complete faith in Jehovah God that guided her life and comforted her during difficult physical times. As a wife, mother, sibling, homemaker and friend, Mary led by example with dedication to the values she strongly adhered to for her own life. Through a marriage that grew in love and devotion with each year, a son that reflects and nurtures everything his mother instilled, brothers and sisters that grew under her matriarchal love and friends that felt a sense of belonging to her wonderful life, Mary will continue to be here for us whenever we need. Mary is survived by her husband of 39 years, Mike Butler, of St. Augustine; her son, John Butler, of Boca Raton, Fla.; sisters, Patty Smoot, of St. Petersburg, Fla., Fran Wood, of Malabar, Fla.; brothers, Marty Muldoon, of Delray Beach, Fla., and Louis Muldoon of Tampa, Fla. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2008, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 2924 State Road 16, St. Augustine, FL 32084. Donations in her memory may be mailed to the Donna Hicken Foundation, 1015 Atlantic Blvd., Ste. 144, Atlantic Beach, FL or made online at www.DonnaHickenFoundation.org.
