KALER, Geraldine Elliot
Geraldine Elliott Kaler, born April 17, 1905, in Donovan, Ill., passed away to join Heaven's awaiting angels on March 28, 2008. She was 102 years, 11 months, and 11 days old. Her Mother, Nanny Donovan Elliott, died when Geraldine was just 5, so she was adopted and raised by her mother's sister, Lizzie L. Lee, and her uncle, Arthur Darwin Lee, still in a close relationship with her beloved father, Robert Ernest Elliott, who was a rural mail carrier, and owner of the REE Theatre, and close to her three brothers, Irl, Howard and Robert Elliott.
Raised in a loving, large, fun-loving family, Gerry's first car was a Model T Ford, and she graduated with a bachelor's degree from Millikin University in Decatur, Ill., in 1927, making, of course, many dear friends along the way, and enjoying "flapper" bobbed hair, silk stockings, dancing the Charleston, and showing a little knee now and then.
Her first teaching job was in a one-room country school. Her career as an educator spanned more than 50 years, 40 in St. Augustine to which she moved in 1942 with her then-husband, Frank Kaler and their young daughter, Alice Elizabeth. The family's youngest child, Margaret Jane, was born in 1944, when Gerry was almost 40.
Gerry raised her daughters as a single mother, bringing both girls up with a strong sense of self love, compassion, and confidence.
Blessed with a loving family and a wide spectrum of friends, Gerry was active in St. Augustine Little Theatre, Trinity Episcopal Church, and later the Retired Educators Association and the St. Augustine Duplicate Bridge Club, in which she remained active until well into her late 90s.
