(St Augustine Record, 4/9/08) ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ LAGASSE, Sherry Frances Sherry Frances Lagasse passed away quietly Jan. 4, 2007, after a lifelong battle with Juvenile Diabetes. Sherry was born Nov. 17, 1955, in Pensacola, Fla. She graduated from Palatka South High School and resided in St. Augustine for the past 20 years. Sherry tackled life with zeal and overcame every obstacle placed in front of her as a result of her illness. She was an independent person, living a happy and full life in spite of her blindness, kidney transplant (donated by her brother Skip) and more recently wheelchair confinement. She was a loving daughter, sister, friend and mother figure. She leaves behind her father, Paul; brother, Scott and Carol and their children, Donalyn and Scotty; brother, Skip and Marlene and their children, Glenda, Sherri and Michelle, the love of her life and best friend, Rick Bravo and his children, Tony, Chris and Tiffany; and the Bravo grandchildren. He was 18 years old, a 2008 graduate of Pedro Menendez High School. He had just been accepted for the fall term at the University of North Florida. His bright smile and big bear hugs will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his loving mother, Anita Lake; his sister, Haven Marie Lake; and brother, Spencer Burton Lake. Lands, age 87, of St. Augustine, died on May 16, 2008, at his residence in St. Augustine. He was born in Jackson County, Ala., and had lived in St. Augustine since 1983, moving here from Scottsboro, Ala. He was a veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Navy. He worked for Union Carbide as a machinist and pipe fitter and later for the Tennessee Valley Authority. Locally, he had worked at several different farms in the Hastings area and was a member of St. Augusine Church of Christ. A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, May 19, 2008, at St. Johns Family Funeral Home, 385 State Road 207 (Call 824-1625 for directions). Funeral services and interment with military honors will be held on Thursday in Scottsboro, Ala. (St Augustine Record, 05/19/08) ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ LANE, Roy Daniel Roy Daniel Lane, 84, of Elkton, Fla., passed away at his home on June 29, 2008. He was born in Moultrie, Ga., on Aug. 30, 1923, to Frank and Minnie Lane. He was the eighth of nine children, and the family moved to St. Johns County shortly after his birth. Roy married Marjorie Masters in 1943, and they had five children. He held several memorable jobs, including transporting soldiers to Camp Blanding during World War II and building shrimp boats with his dad and brothers in St. Augustine. He is best known as being the longtime manager of Sunshine Farms in Mill Creek. After his retirement, he enjoyed operating his small aviary, traveling and spending time with his family. He was a very talented carpenter and was always eager to help with any construction projects. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, four sisters, his wife, Marjorie, a son, Danny Lane, and granddaughter, Shannon Hawkins. Roy is survived by four children, Diane (Roy) Hawkins, of San Mateo, David (Regina) Lane, of Palm Coast, Patty (Gary) Banks, of Elkton, and Sandra (Jeff) Pearson, of St. Augustine; 18 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a large extended family. Roy was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him, especially those who had the privilege to call him "Daddy" or "Papa." He was a native of Houston and was raised and spent most of his life in St. Augustine. Langston worked for Watco Inc. for 18 years and then owned and operated Industrial Locomotive LLC. She worked for 32 years as an accounting bookkeeper with Green's Fuel, Tex Gas and Suburban Propane in Palatka. She was a very devoted grandmother and loved gardening, going to garage sales and photography. Lawson, 73, of St. Augustine, died April 5, 2008, at Flagler Hospital. Mr. Lawson was a native of Crisfield, Md., and had resided in Jacksonville from 1985 until 1999 when he moved to St. Augustine. He was retired from Hughes Aircraft after 32 years of service as an aircraft engineer. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Lazeski, 86, of St. Augustine, died peacefully with his family at his side Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at the Veterans Medical Center, Gainesville, Fla. He was the widower of Marjorie "Marjie" (Kanny) Lazeski. Mr. Lazeski, "Laze" was born Aug. 12, 1921 in Waterbury, Conn., a son of John and Amelia (Tilka) Lazeski. He was educated in Waterbury, graduating from Leavenworth High School class of 1941. He enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps on July 15, 1942, completed basic training at Parris Island, S.C., to Cherry Point, N.C., to North Island, San Diego. He belonged to the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, attached to the 1st Division. As a staff sergeant, he fought in the Pacific from December 1942 to April 1943, and in capture and defense of Guadacanal. He was honorably discharged from Quantico, Va., Feb. 2, 1946. He achieved rifle expert and pistol sharpshooter status. While in the Marines on leave, he met and fell in love with the beautiful Marjorie Kanny, a Waterbury native. They were married Sept. 15, 1946 at St. John's Episcopal Church, Waterbury. They lived in Waterbury till 1962 when they moved to Middlebury, Conn. "Laze" worked for Coca Cola, then Vickers, both in Waterbury. After leaving Vickers, he owned and operated his own hydraulic company. He and Marjie celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in September 1996. Shortly after Margie's death in 1997, he moved to St. Augustine, Fla. Throughout his life he was a member of the Brass City Memorial Chapter of the Marine Corps League, The Nutmeg State Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans, the Waterbury Elks, and Brass City Detachment. He dearly loved his family, was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He also was an ardent fan of the UConn Women's Huskies basketball team. He is predeceased by his brother, Edward Lazesky, and his sister, Stacia Rock. He is survived by his sister, Wanda Schroaider of Waterbury, as well as his son, Jan Lazeski of St. Augustine and daughters, Katherine Weis and her husband, Michael of Napa, Calif., Paula Lazeski and her husband, Marc Olivieri of Roxbury, Conn., and Lori Larsen of Yarmouth Port, Mass. His is also survived by his seven grandchildren, Dallas Bartlett and his wife Kelly, of Newport Beach, Calif., Jarus Lazeski of Columbia, Conn., Ryan Olivieri of Woodbury, Conn., Jillene Lazeski Smith and her husband Justin, of Plainfield, Conn., Jon Olivieri of Philadelphia, Pa., Gabriel Lefebvre of Napa, Calif., and Hess Larsen of Yarmouth Port. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 1 p.m. at St. John's Church in Waterbury. (St Augustine Record, 5/04/08) ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ LEE, Thomas Andre Thomas Andre Lee passed away Friday, May 23, 2008, in St. Augustine from injuries sustained from an automobile accident on State Road 206. He was born in Mountain View, Calif., on Jan. 15, 1966. In 1969, his family moved to St. Augustine, where he attended local schools. Tom was a true entrepreneur, involved in many things, primarily real estate acquisition and renovation. He acquired such projects such as the Sea Breeze Hotel on Anastasia Island and the Casa de Vilano on Vilano Beach. With each project, he lovingly over-improved things, much like he lived his own life, striving for perfection with every task. Tommy was an avid athlete, participating in numerous sports throughout the city. He spent many hours a day of his life enjoying his boat and the beach with his children, Stephanie and Damon, fishing, surfing and appreciating nature. Tommy traveled extensively as well, with his children and those he loved the most, to exotic destinations searching and finding, at times, the perfect wave for surfing was his true passion. He lived with the knowledge and joy that every day he had was a gift and that we are all just passing through this life. Tom was like a son and brother to so many who knew him. He will be missed but surely not forgotten for the legacy of love and compassion he spread throughout this earth. God could not have given us a better son, father and brother. He was, for all that he achieved, his father's and family's superstar. He will be fondly remembered forever by his children, Damon and Stephanie Lee; his parents, James Lee and Mary Jo Ruiz; his siblings, Victoria Guttinger (Walt), Valerie Lee Kleinschek (Mike), Joseph Lee and Michael Lee; as well as nieces, Shelby Ayano and Skylar; and nephews, Ian and Weston; and by the countless friends whose lives he touched. (St Augustine Record, 05/24/08) _________________________________________________________________________________________________ LEMONS, Maxine Maxine Lemons, 94, passed away Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007, in the loving care of the Grafton House, St. Augustine. Maxine was born, Sept. 11, 1913, in Huntington, W.Va., and completed her high school education at Huntington High School, where she graduated in 1932. After completing a successful career in business, she graciously accepted retirement and soon moved to the Fort Lauderdale area with her husband, E.E. "Slim" Lemons. In retirement, Maxine found great joy in visiting and assisting the elderly in local retirement facilities. While residing in south Florida, she attended First Presbyterian Church of Coral Springs. Maxine moved to St. Augustine in late 2005 to be near her son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren, all residing in the Saint Augustine/Jacksonville area. She was a resident of Summerville Assisted Living and later, the Grafton House. Before becoming ill, she attended Good News Church on a regular basis. Maxine was first and foremost a wonderful and thoughtful mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother, and a true and selfless friend to her family, extended family, and many friends. Maxine is survived by her son, Conley and his wife Janet of St. Augustine; two grandchildren, Jamee L. Gullion and Robert James Brite Jr., both of St. Augustine; and three great-grandchildren, Carson Brite, Tabatha Gullion, and Gabe Gullion. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2007, at Good News Church in St. Augustine. Leonard, died peacefully at her Jacksonville home on Jan. 11, 2008, after a lengthy illness. She was 89. Born Feb. 20, 1918, in Wolfeboro, N.H., Phyllis moved to Hastings in 1926 with her parents, Lewis H. and Elizabeth W. Leonard. Phyllis attended Hastings High School, graduating in 1937. After graduation, Phyllis attended Stetson University, where she received her bachelor of science degree in 1941. Following college, Phyllis initially taught school in Starke before returning to Hastings in 1943 where she began a 45-year career at Wetumpka Fruit Co., one of the pioneering agricultural companies in the state. Phyllis held the position of secretary-treasurer for that corporation until her retirement in 1988. While a resident of Hastings, Phyllis was an active member of the community and of the First Baptist Church of Hastings. In 1990, Phyllis moved to Wesley Manor (now Westminster Woods) in Mandarin. She has since been a member of the Fruit Cove Baptist Church. Throughout her life, Phyllis has been known for her charm and intelligence, which did not diminish even with advancing age. She is survived by her cousins, Charlotte Teele, Betty Holmes, Bob Holmes, John Holmes Jr., Loretta Loiselle and Lucille Lucy, all of New Hampshire; and by her cousins, Diana Leonard and Jennifer Riedeburg, both of Jacksonville, and Greg Leonard of Ponte Vedra Beach. Phyllis was a warm, caring woman admired by many. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Graveside services were held 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13, 2008, at Palatka Memorial Gardens. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Magna Carter Dames. She loved the beach, smoking and a Manhattan. She was a bookkeeper and was of the Presbyterian faith. "Nancy" Jean (Nancy) Longstreth, 87, of St. Augustine, Fla., passed away on Feb. 1, 2008, at Moultrie Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Springfield, Mass., and was a longtime resident of Buffalo, N.Y., and later Athens, Ga., before moving to St. Augustine in 2006. Mrs. Longstreth was a member of St. Gregory the Great Episcopal Church in Athens. She was also very active in the Lady's Gardens Club and the Cedar Creek Garden Club in Athens where she served as club secretary and treasurer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Paul Longstreth, M.D., and a son, Allen Lee Longstreth. She is survived by a son, Paul Scott Longstreth and daughter-in-Law, Kimberley of St. Augustine. A celebration of her life will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, 2008, at St. Gregory the Great Episcopal Church in Athens, Ga. Ms. Lord was a native of Leesburg, Va., born March 15, 1918. She was a former resident of St. Augustine moving to Flagler County as an infant. She was a member of Bunnell High School class of 1936. She was retired from Flagler County Sheriff's Office after 38 years as a secretary, having worked for five Sheriffs and was a charter member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Old Kings Highway Chapter. Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008 at Espanola Cemetery, County Road 205 in Bunnell. The Rev. Doug Knight will officiate. She is survived by five nephews, Lou Fortner, Tim Fortner and Shawn Fortner, all of Hastings, and Quentin Emery and Howard Emery, of Bunnell; five nieces, Deborah Lands of Hastings, Stephanie Gilchrist of Jacksonville, Fla., Beverly Emery of Bunnell, Kathryn Rich of Bonifay, Fla., and Patricia Marshall of Greenville, S.C.; also 36 great-nephews and nieces; 48 great-great-nephews and nieces; and five great-great-great nephews and nieces; one sister-in-law, Joyce Patrick of Espanola. (St Augustine Record, 2/3/08) __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ LORD, Virginia Johnson Virginia Johnson Lord, 81, passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at The Oaks at Forsyth, Winston-Salem, N.C. She was born Aug. 31, 1926, in St. Johns County, Fla., to the late Marion Lorenzo and Ruth Usina Johnson. Virginia was a volunteer at Forsyth Medical Center for over 20 years. Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband, Carl Lamar Lord Sr. Surviving are two daughters, Cheryl Harris and husband, Harlow, of Florida, and Lois Darleen Smith and husband, Russell, of Winston-Salem; one son, Carl Lord Jr., of Denver, N.C.; six grandchildren, Tommy Glisson, Scott Smith, Patti James, Jason Smith, Michael Lord and Lamar Lord; three great-grandchildren, Scott and Michael James and Joseph Smith; brother, Gene Johnson and wife, Bessie; sister, Marion Booth and husband, Donald, all of St. Augustine. Also surviving are two stepgranddaughters, Sheila Chandler of San Antonio, Texas, and Kelly Cates of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and two step-great-grandchildren, Jessica Cates and Joshua Chandler. Internment will be at the Craig Memorial Park in St. Augustine with a memorial service to be scheduled at a later date. Lubonski, 87, of St. Augustine, died Feb. 23, 2008, at his home. Mr. Lubonski was a native of Philadelphia and had resided in New Jersey before moving to St. Augustine 26 years ago. Mr. Lubonski was retired from the Evening Bulletin in Pennsylvania after 45 years of service, having worked there as a print and ad composer. He was a veteran and a tank driver, having earned the Bronze Star while serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was of the Catholic faith. Services: A memorial service will be held 9 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anastasia Catholic Church. Survivors: His sons, Jerry, St. Augustine, and Joseph and William; sisters, Evelyn and Anna Rose, all of New Jersey; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine Lyons Lubonski.
