NICHOLS, Harold J. "Nick"
Harold J. "Nick" Nichols, 86, of 19 River Road in Tupper Lake, N.Y., and 1039 Alcala Drive in St. Augustine, died peacefully with friends and family at his side, on Monday afternoon, June 23, 2008, at Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake, N.Y.
Born on July 4, 1921, Nick was the only child of Harold Manning Nichols and Belle Brothers Nichols. He lived in his father's ancestral home in Louisville Landing and attended a one-room school in the country until he entered Massena High School in 1932. He graduated in 1936, just two weeks before his 15th birthday.
Too young to enter college, he took a post-graduate course at the high school. He graduated from Canton ATI in 1939 with an associate of arts degree in chemistry and later earned a bachelor's of science in business administration in 1975 from SUNY Empire State College.
On June 7, 1943, he married the former Marion Wood in Tupper Lake. Friends shared their wartime gas rations to fund their honeymoon in Montreal. The couple first lived in Schenectady, N.Y., where he was a chemist and supervisor at Schenectady Varnish. The family moved to Tupper Lake in 1949, whereupon Nick established the Nichols Insurance Agency. Originally specializing in life insurance, he found that chain saw insurance was a great seller in the busy logging years of the '50s and '60s. As time went on, the business expanded into all areas of insurance. Nick became very active at the state level in the New York State Independent Agents Association and served as its president in 1966-1967.
During the family's early years they enjoyed camp life, water skiing and snow skiing together, as well as long vacations pulling a travel trailer. Following his retirement, Nick and Marion spent winters in Florida, enjoying Winnebago rallies throughout the South.
Always very active in community affairs, Nick quickly became a devoted member of the Tupper Lake Lions Club, sponsoring several new members and chartering new Lions Clubs in northern New York. He moved quickly through all the offices, serving as president of the local club in 1954-1955, and as District Governor of District 20-W in New York State.
He organized an eye bank and sight conservation committee and was director of the Northeastern New York Sight Conservation Society in 1978. At that time he also instituted a new Lions Club in Clearwater, Fla.
His extensive community service also included membership in the Mt. Morris Committee, which was instrumental in the development of the Big Tupper Ski Center. He was president of the chamber of commerce for many years and was its choice for Citizen of the Year in 1964. He was a longtime member of the Tupper Lake Country Club Board, served on the local library board for many years, was a charter member of the local rescue squad and a dedicated member of several community development corporations.
He played an instrumental role in many more community affairs.
During this past year, Nick's life was greatly enriched by the love and companionship of his team of caregivers.
Nick was predeceased by his wife, Marion Wood Nichols, in 1996.
He is survived by his four children, Beth Johnson, Pam Belleville and Stuart Nichols, of Tupper Lake, N.Y., and Julie Welch Tomlinson of Potsdam; as well as his longtime companion, Belle Waldron, now of Mesa, Ariz. He doted on his six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Those wishing to remember Nick might consider contributions to the Tupper Lake Volunteer Ambulance and Rescue Squad or to The Wild Center, Tupper Lake's Natural History Museum, in care of the funeral home, Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, at 24 Cliff Ave., Tupper Lake, N.Y. 12986.
Family members will hold a private service and burial of his ashes at their convenience.

His aunt and uncle, Johnny and Farrish Justice of North Carolina also survive him.
All is now. "For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun?
If you would indeed behold the spirit of death, open your heart wide unto the body of life.
For life and death are one, even as the river and the sea are one.
And what is to cease breathing, but to free the breath from its restless tides, that it may rise and expand unencumbered."
