ABBRUSCATO, Michael Martin
Michael Martin Abbruscato, 66, peacefully went to be with his Heavenly Father on Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009, surrounded by his family and friends at his home in Palm Coast, Fla.

Michael was born on Thursday, June 17, 1943, in Bridgeport, Conn., to the late Michael Joseph and Lila S. (Terwilliger) Abbruscato. Mr. Abbruscato proudly served his country, faithfully in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was an E-5 sergeant at Camp Lejeune, Ammo Company, in North Carolina having served in the Vietnam War.
He was employed as a supervisor at Avco Textron Lycoming in Stratford, Conn., for 32 years and was a previous co-owner/operator of Spanky's Pizza House II in St. Augustine, Fla., for 10 years.

Mr. Abbruscato is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Daisy R. Abbruscato of Palm Coast; daughters, Terri-Lynn Scinto and Mikaela Abbruscato, both of Palm Coast, and Janice Marie Lane of Meriden, Conn.; son by choice, D. Michael Lane of Meriden, Conn.; brothers, Charles Richard Abbruscato and wife, Nancy, of Viera, Fla., and James Abbruscato and wife, Karen, of Hamden, Conn.; sister, Lollie Carpinelli and husband, Tony, of Crescent City, Fla.; grandchildren, Tyler, Zackery, Michael, EmmaLee, Nathan and Jake. Many co-workers, including Stanley Kujuc and Bradley Marshall; many other relatives and friends who will miss him dearly.

A celebration of Michael's life will be 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, at Watts Funeral Home Chapel in San Mateo, Fla. Military Honors will be bestowed by the Marine Corps.

ABBOTT, Lois Marie
Lois Marie Abbott, 82, passed away at her home on Aug. 29, 2009.

She is survived by her two daughters, Sharon Stiffler (Harry) and Linda Abbott; two grandchildren, Trisha Smith (Dan) and Jason Pinoni (Brittany); three great-grandchildren, Dominic Porter, Jillian Carr and Lia Smith; and three brothers, Arnold, Peter and Robert Woods.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Craig Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at Craig Memorial Park.

Helen Acerro passed away peacefully at her home with her family at her side, on Sunday, June 28, 2009.
Born in New York City, Helen moved to Florida in 1979.

She is survived by her niece, Nan Corrado, husband, Tommy, and their children, Kelly, Matt and Joey.

A Memorial Mass is planned at St. Anastasia Church in August.

ACOSTA, Betty Sue Griffin
Betty Sue Griffin Acosta died peacefully, June 27, 2009, in the McGraw Center for Caring, following a short illness.

She was the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. James B. Griffin and since 1938 was raised in St. Augustine, where she attended St. Joseph Academy and Ketterlinus High School.

She is survived by her sister, Carolina Griffin Moreau; her three children, Susan Page Acosta-Peeler and Michael, Clayton Acosta and Patsy, and Robbin Brooke Acosta Tanner Chris; grandchildren, Jennifer White and Dave, Andrew Acosta-Peeler, Emmalee Page Acosta-Tanner, Amber, Cullen and Easton Acosta; great-grandchildren, Mary Page, John, Freddie, Katie and Andy White.

ADAMS, Charles Mark
Charles Mark Adams, 78, died at home surrounded by his family on February 26, 2010.
He was a native of Conneaut, Ohio, and lived there until he left to serve in the United States Army during the Korean War. He went to work for Singer Sewing Co. and enjoyed a 20+ year career in sales and management. He later purchased and managed several Singer dealerships in both North Carolina and Florida.
Mr. Adams was a devoted member and Deacon in the Southern Baptist Church and a member of Anastasia Baptist Church.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his surviving family; his wife of 57 years, Carole Ann Adams; son, Michael (Ida) Adams of Concord, N.C.; two daughters, Cheryl Adams of St. Augustine, Lisa (Jonathan) Bowers of Harrisburg, N.C.; sister Audrey Campbell of Las Vegas, Nev.; 9 grandchildren, Christopher, Ryan, Stephen, Daniel, Cody, Megan, Rachel, Ashley, Matthew and one great-grand daughter, Chloe.

ADAMS, Corliss Wyatt
Corliss Wyatt Adams, 88, of Glenmoor in St. Augustine, passed away peacefully on Nov. 9, 2008, with his loving wife, Irene, and daughter, Lark, by his side.
He was born on June 17, 1920, in Des Moines, Iowa, and lived in numerous cities in both the U.S. and abroad during his 20 years of service in the U.S. Navy. He moved to Daytona Beach in 1979. Corliss received his undergraduate degree from the U.S. Naval Academy, his master's from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his doctorate from the University of Texas. He served as a naval pilot during WWII and the Korean War. He later worked as an aeronautical engineer at General Dynamics, where he helped design the F1-11, and then as a professor of aeronautical engineering at Embry Riddle.He was a loving, accomplished officer, husband, father and grandfather and a true gentleman who will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Irene; daughter, Lark Shields, of Ormond Beach; and grandchildren, Ashley and Oliver Shields. His son, James C. Adams, predeceases him.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday at Creighton Hall at Glenmoor with Rev. Dr. James Balke, chaplain, officiating.

ADAMS, Emily McCoy
Emily McCoy Adams, 86, native of Damascus, Ga., entered into eternal rest June 19, 2008 at the Ponce de Leon Care Center.
Mrs. Adams attended local schools and graduated from Excelsior High School. She was employed by both St. Augustine General Hospital and Flagler Hospitals.
She was active member of her Sunday school and usher board at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church before moving her membership to Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, where she served on the Deaconess Board. She was a life member of the Elks Lodge.
She leaves to cherish her memory numerous nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends, including her caregiver and nephew, Col. Walter D. McCoy, Palm Coast, Fla.
A service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, June 26, 2008 at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church, Evergreen Cemetery with the Rev. Richard A. Madison officiating. Calling hours are Wednesday from 5-9 p.m. at Chase Chapel.

ADAMS, James C.
James C. "Mr. Jimmie" Adams, 83, St. Augustine, died Dec. 29, 2008, at the Riverwood Nursing Center in Jacksonville.
He was born in Bayard, Fla., one of 17 children, and had resided here all of his life. He had owned and operated Temperature Control Heating and Air Conditioning from 1969 until his retirement.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II in both Normandy and the Pacific Theatre. He was of the Baptist faith.

Private services are planned.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Alice Adams; two daughters, Anastasia Williams and her husband, Mark, Pamela Sapp and her husband, Kevin, all of St. Augustine; one brother, Louis B. Adams Sr. and his wife, Nita, Macon, Ga.; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Pierre; a grandson, Paul Ryan Pierre; and a stepdaughter, Valerie Prevatt.

ADAMSON, Jerry L.
Jerry L. Adamson, a.k.a. "Boatman," 67, passed away on Oct. 21, 2008. He was born Dec. 3, 1940 in Adams County, Ohio. Boatman was a riverboat pilot on the Ohio River, a painter, and a bartender at C.J's Bar. His door was never locked and he helped many a friend.
He is survived by his mother, Dorothy Adamson; daughter, Liba (Paul) Markowski; sons, Chris Adamson and Shane (Dorothy) Adamson; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Jimmy Adamson. He was preceded in death by his father, Albert and brother, Jack.

AESCHBACH, Rosemary Ann
Rosemary Ann Aeschbach, 74, of St. Augustine, died March 12, 2008, at her home. Mrs. Aeschbach was a native of Buffalo, N.Y., and had resided in St. Augustine since 1974. She owned and operated several businesses and was the original owner of Panama Hatties. She was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church.
Services: A memorial service will be held 9 a.m. Monday at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Officiating: The Rev. William C. Mooney, pastor.
Burial: San Lorenzo Cemetery.
Survivors: Her daughters, Lisa Cornish, St. Augustine, and Lori McFadden, Tallahassee; brother, Theodore Polakiewicz, Tennessee; sisters, Florence Lolito and Stella Pawlick, both of New York; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

ALBANESE, Dolores Elizabeth "Mickey"
Dolores Elizabeth "Mickey" Albanese, 78, St. Augustine, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday July 28, 2009. Mickey was born to Charles and Marie Vierschilling on Nov. 14, 1930. She was a former resident of Palisades Park, N.J., and Delray Beach, Fla. She moved to St. Augustine in 1986. She was of the Catholic faith.

On Aug. 14, 1953, she married John Peter Albanese, who went home to heaven in 1983. They had two children, Antoinette and Nicholas Charles (Tonnya). She had four grandchildren, John McKenny (Rachel), Merideth, Nicholas E. and Vincent Albanese. She had three great-grandchildren, Joseph and Dominic Albanese and Samantha McKenny.

She was predeceased by her brother, Charles, and is survived by her sister, Rose Druvet (Claude) and several nephews and nieces. Mickey was greatly loved by her friends and family and will be sorely missed by all.

Memorial services will be held 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 3, 2009, at St. Johns Family Funeral Home, with the Rev. Andy Blaczkowski officiating.

Eva Joan Alberts, 64, St. Augustine, died Sept. 27, 2009, at the Earl B. Hadlow Center for Caring in Jacksonville. She was born in Lakeland, Fla., and had resided in St. Augustine for 10 years, moving here from Lakeland. She was a homemaker.

Private services will be held at a later date.

ALBRIGHT, Alice
Alice Y. Albright, 79, St. Augustine, died July 18, 2000, at home. She was a native of Early Branch, S.C., who moved to St. Augustine in early childhood. She was a member of Phi Delta Kappa sorority. She was also a former choir member, a member of the Parsonage Aid Board and Church Librarian at the First Baptist Church.

Services will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, at the First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Allan C. Pennill Sr. officiating.
Burial will be in Pinehurst Cemetery. Friends may call at Chase & Son today from 5-9 p.m., and at the church Saturday from 12 noon until the hour of service. The procession will leave from 106 N. Rodriguez St. at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

Survivors include a daughter, Myra Mills, St. Augustine; a son, Michael Richards, New York, New York; two sisters, Beatrice Lovell and Queen E. Mitchell, both of St. Augustine; four grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and other relatives.

Audrey Schwenk Aldridge, 86, passed away Aug. 21, 2008.
The daughter of Edwin and Rosalind Miller Schwenk, she was born on Nov. 12, 1921, in Southampton, N.Y., where she resided until 1979 before moving to Delray Beach and later to St. Augustine.
She was predeceased by her husband, Clifford J. Aldridge, and is survived by two daughters, Diane Solms (George), of St. Augustine and Pamela Damus, of Ponte Vedra Beach; five grandchildren, Robert Solms (Kristine), of Lakeland, Michael Solms (Susan), of St. Augustine, Elizabeth Solms, of New York City, Elizabeth Damus Foudy (Patrick), of Los Angeles, and David Damus, also of Los Angeles; four great-grandchildren, Kasandra and Kimberly Solms, of Lakeland, and Matthew and Sydney Solms, of St. Augustine; a brother, Edwin Miller Schwenk (Diana), of Southampton; and a sister, Beverly Wagner (Harry), of Boynton Beach.

ALEXANDER, Barbara Jean
Barbara Jean Alexander, 77, of St. Augustine, passed away Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009, at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine following an extended illness. She was a native of St. Louis, Mo., and resided in St. Augustine for the past 15 years, moving there from Palatka. She had worked as a lab technician with Dr. Charles Barrineau and Dr. Fairfax Montague in Palatka and later with the St. Augustine General Hospital and Flagler Hospital. She had been a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Palatka.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Walt Alexander; two sons, James Alexander and wife, Shanna, of Palatka, and Keith Alexander and wife, Debra, of The Woodlands, Texas; a daughter, Lynne Powell, and husband, Dr. James Powell, of St. Augustine; four grandchildren, Josh Alexander and wife, Regina, of Palatka, Gary Wilson and wife, Sharee, of St. Augustine, Jeremy Alexander and wife, Tonya, of Palatka, and Leslie Alexander of The Woodlands; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, at Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka, with the Rev. Ken Johnson officiating.

Dorothy Thomas Alexander, 79, of St. Augustine, died Jan. 2, 2008, at Flagler Hospital. Mrs. Alexander was a native and lifelong resident of St. Augustine. Mrs. Alexander was a homemaker, a member of the Church of God by Faith where she was an assistant president of Home Mission, Sunday school secretary, Willing Workers Club secretary and a Mother of the church.
Services: Noon Saturday at New Mt. Moriah Christian Ministry, The Rev. Ronald Stafford, pastor. Officiating: The Rev. Lawson Foster, pastor of Church of God by Faith. Calling hours: 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at Chase Chapel and from 11 a.m. until the hour of service at the church. Burial: Woodlawn Cemetery.

ALEXANDER, Steven
Steve Alexander -- "Chico" of Montauk Point, Long Island, "Steve Green" of Key West, and "Tassel Steve" or " Steve A" of St. Augustine -- left us unexpectedly on Nov. 11, 2008. The avid fisherman, charter boat captain, eBay entrepreneur and Harley Davidson enthusiast that he was is gone but not forgotten and will be deeply missed. He is survived by his always loving wife, Doris; daughter, Brandi; son, Donald; and grandson, Ethan; along with many grieving friends.
A celebration of life memorial picnic will be held at Lighthouse Park in St. Augustine. All friends are invited to attend on Nov. 23, 2008, from 2 to 4 p.m. (rain or shine). Please bring your own picnic lunch and join us in celebration.

ALISON, Grover Jr.
Grover Alison Jr., 88, passed away on Jan. 30, 2009, at Stephens Memorial Home following an extended illness. He was born July 27, 1920, in Gainesville, Fla., the youngest son of Grover and Edelweiss Price Alison.
While spending most of his youth in Gainesville, Grover moved and graduated from Leesburg High School in 1938. He attended Hobart College in Geneva, N.Y., and then the University of Florida where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity, graduating in 1942.
Grover received a divinity degree from the University of the South, Sewanee, Tenn., in 1944 and was ordained an Episcopal priest. He served as rector of St. Mark's Church in Starke, Fla., as well as chaplain at Camp Blanding. From 1946-57, Grover was the priest in charge of Grace Chapel, now San Jose Episcopal Church in Jacksonville. Serving a growing congregation, he oversaw the creation of the affiliate church day school in 1955. Grover also served at the Church of Our Savior in Mandarin as well as chaplain for Bolles Military Academy.
After leaving the ministry in 1957, Grover led a life of travel. He did relief work in Africa and the Caribbean area for Church World Service. Subsequently, he founded Bell, Book and Candle, the first American-style bookstores in Puerto Rico. He also lived in Costa Rica and Brazil while representing American publishers throughout Latin America.
Even upon retiring to Barrataria Island at Matanzas Inlet, St. Augustine, Grover continued traveling extensively around the world as a cruise ship host for Cunard and Golden Bear Travel. While home, he enjoyed his family and dog, Tawny Marlena, the St. Augustine Duplicate Bridge Club, St. Anastasia Catholic Church and Trinity Episcopal Parish.

Grover is survived by his children, Margaret Wiles and John Alison of St. Augustine and Tom Alison (Elizabeth) of St. Petersburg; his brother, John Richardson Alison (Penni) of Washington, D.C.; eight grandchildren, Aimee and Michael (Ana) Wiles, Melissa Irre, Chris, Tom (Rebecca), Michael, David and Matthew Alison, and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother, Landon Alison, and his former wife, Virginia Thomas Alison

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 14 at Trinity Episcopal Church, St. Augustine. The Rt. Reverend Charles L. Keyser, assisting bishop of the Diocese of Florida, will officiate.

ALLEN, A. Linda
A. Linda Allen, 100, of St. Augustine, died on April 15, 2008, at her residence in St. Augustine.
She was born in Hazleton, Pa., and had resided in St. Augustine since 1997, moving here from the Tampa/St. Pete area.
Ms. Allen was a graduate of Loyola-Marymount University in Los Angeles, Calif., with a degree in education. For many years, she traveled the world working as a private tutor, teaching English, Spanish and French.
In later years she owned and operated a bed & breakfast in Massachusetts and a health food store in Los Angeles.
She was a lifetime member volunteer for the American Red Cross and a member of the British Guild of Drugless Practitioners. Locally she was a member of San Sebastian Catholic Church and was very active at the Council on Aging.
Services: A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 25, 2008, at the Council on Aging, 180 Marine St.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Virginia Martini.
Survivors: She is survived by a niece, Jackie Hayter and a nephew, Michael Nessler, both of St. Augustine.

ALLEN, Addie Marie
Addie Marie Allen, 91, of St. Augustine, passed away peacefully June 15, 2008, at Moultrie Creek Nursing and Rehab Center.
She was born in Pittsburg, Kan., and had resided in St. Augustine since 1974, moving here from Detroit, Mich. Addie enjoyed traveling, golf, dancing and the pleasure of many good friends. She was a member of the St. Augustine Shores Ladies Golf Association, the Riverview Club and the St. Augustine Ballroom Dance Association. She was of the Methodist faith.
A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of St. Johns Family Funeral Home, 385 S.R. 207. Flowers are gratefully declined. Those wishing may make contributions in her memory for the residents' social activities to Activities Director Viva Symonett, care of Moultrie Creek Nursing and Rehab Center, 200 Mariner Health Way, St. Augustine, FL 32086.
Interment services will be private.
She was the loving wife to Robert Allen for 73 years; beloved mother to Faira Lee Tuzinowski and Toby Jane Fox; grandmother to Michael, Allison and Robert; great-grandmother to Todd, Tabatha and Cassaundra.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Phyllis Little.

ALLEN, Clifford L.
Funeral services for Clifford L. Allen, 94, who passed away unexpectly on Sunday morning, July 5, 2009, will be held on Friday, July 10, 2009, at 11 a.m. at his former church, Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church, 623 S. Magnolia Ave., Ocala, Fla.

Mr. Allen was a resident of St. Augustine, residing at 219 Phoenetia Drive.
He leaves to cherish his memory his children and his caregiver, Mrs. Gracie L. Gardner, and family.

Edison Ford Allen, 77, of St. Augustine, died Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, at home.
The Beaumont, Texas, native moved from Norfolk, Va., to St. Augustine in 2003. He was a retired U.S. Marine Corps master gunnery sergeant and a member of the Norfolk, Va., TSIGA Golf League, BFW, FRA and American Legion.

Lloyd Ray Allen, 86, of St. Augustine, died Jan. 11, 2008, at Our Family and Friends Assisted Living Facility. Mr. Allen was a native of Heber Springs, Ark., and had resided in St. Augustine for the past 28 years. Mr. Allen was a retired communication specialist for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and served in the Rainbow Division of the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Southern Baptist faith and the Army Rainbow Division Retirees.

ALLEN, Ronald David
Ronald David Allen, 53, of 1950 Sheridan Dr., St. Augustine, died June 8, 2008 at St. Augustine Health and Rehabilitation Center. Dave, as his friends called him, was born in Nashville, Tenn., on Dec. 1, 1954. His family moved to Jacksonville in 1956. He later attended Rebault High School. His family moved to the Clay Hill area of Clay County in 1972 where he resided until he moved to St. Augustine in 1974. He lived here off and on till his death and considered St. Augustine his home.
He worked as a truck driver by profession until he became unable to drive. He fought a long and exhausting battle with cancer.
The last seven or eight years, health providing, he worked for the St. Augustine Record as a newspaper hawker on the corner of Cordova and King Street. As one of the oldest and last hawkers left in the country he loved his job. He made many friends and enjoyed meeting people and giving directions to the tourist.
Dave was known as the 'man with many hats'. His most famous was the Davy Crocket coon skin had that he most often wore. He was always there in the middle of the street with his newspapers, his keen wit and friendly smile. He will be missed!
A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 13, 2008 at Bethany Baptist Church on C.R. 208 in Bakersville at 7 p.m. All wishing to attend are invited and appreciated. Dave is survived by his mother, Sara G. Allen, and three brothers, Raymond, Randal and Darrell, all of Florida

ALLEN, William Michael "Mike"
William Michael "Mike" Allen, 52, passed away at home July 30, 2009, surrounded by his family. He was born Aug. 20, 1956 in Norfolk, Va., the son of Richard Jerome "Jerry" Allen and Marie Hicks Allen.

Mike was a graduate of St. Joseph's Academy in St. Augustine and Florida State University, and he obtained a law degree from Stetson University College of Law.
As a lawyer involved in real estate development, he began his career with Hall Properties, Inc. in Jacksonville. He then served as vice president of real estate for Stein Mart Inc., from 1993 to 2008.
Mike was a faithful member of Second Church of Christ, Scientist in Jacksonville and, subsequently, First Church of Christ, Scientist in Jacksonville Beach, where he served as First Reader, Board Chairman, Sunday School Superintendent and teacher.

An accomplished athlete, in high school Mike participated on the football, basketball, swim, golf, and track teams, and played water polo at FSU. He enjoyed playing sports with friends in the Jacksonville Bar Association Lawyers League. He also enjoyed golf, which he began as a youth at Hyde Park Golf Club and Duclay Country Club in Jacksonville. He enjoyed all water sports, including sailing, surfing, water skiing, and swimming.
Mike enjoyed working with children and read to students in the Readers Aloud program at Ponte Vedra/Palm Valley Elementary School. He was the founding chief of the Ponte Vedra Beach YMCA Indian Princess Creek tribe. He also enjoyed coaching his children in soccer and basketball.

He was a member of The Florida Bar, the International Council of Shopping Centers, a former member of Timuquana Country Club and a current member of the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club.

A loving, supportive husband, father, son, brother, and friend, Mike is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Claiborne Allen; his children, Katherine Elizabeth Allen and William Claiborne Allen, Ponte Vedra Beach; sisters, Lenore Allen Upp (John), St. Augustine; Jennifer Allen, Jacksonville; Amy Allen, Tamarac; brother, Adam Allen (Joyce), Lake Worth; and grandmother, Frances Allen, Norfolk, Va. Mike is also survived by a wealth of extended family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009, at the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club Convention Center.

AMANN, Mark R.
Mark R. Amann, 67, of St. Augustine, Fla., formerly of Atlanta, Ga., died Monday, July 27, 2009, at Hospice Atlanta after suffering a brain tumor.

Mark was the eldest son of now deceased Louis and Nancy Amann, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Atlanta, Ga.

He is survived by his daughter, Marcy A. Owens, her husband, Johnny S. Owens; three wonderful grandchildren; sister, Mary A. Destro; brother, Peter A. Amann; and nieces and one nephew.

Mark was a graduate of the Marist School and attended Christ the King Cathedral in Atlanta. Mark spent 16 special years in St. Augustine in volunteer service to such organizations as the Knights of Columbus, the Basilica of St. Augustine, the GOP, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Habitat for Humanity, Flagler Hospital and the St. Augustine Fire Department, all of which were greatly important to him.

The family will receive friends at the Craig Funeral Home Thursday evening, July 30, 2009, from 5 to 8 p.m. Prayer service to begin at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at the Basilica of St. Augustine on Friday at 11 a.m. followed by interment at San Lorenzo Cemetery. AMBROSE, Richard "Dick"
Richard "Dick" Ambrose passed away at sunrise, June 12, 2008, in Tucson, Ariz.
He was born Dec. 24, 1923, in Norton, Kan., to Leora Kuchera and Raymond Ambrose. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps at the beginning of World War II, flying hundreds of missions to the European front. At the end of the war he helped relocate concentration camp survivors and flew top German scientists Von Braun and Ley to the U.S. Following the war, he attended Stanford University.
He married Shirley Otter in 1948, and they settled in Manhattan, Kan., where he owned and operated several dairy plants, including Chappell's All Star, and a cattle ranch east of Manhattan. Upon retirement, he and second wife, Orlain, moved permanently to Tucson. Dick was an expert trap and skeet shootist, waterfowl hunter and fisherman, and an avid golfer well into his 80s. He had a lifelong love and compassion for animals of all kinds.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Orlain; daughter, Dena Raye Ambrose; and sister, Gloria Bartholomew. He leaves his loving family, son, Rick Ambrose; daughter, Bryanne Ambrose Hamilton (Bill), of St. Augustine; grandchildren, Richard Jason Ambrose, Emily Ambrose Zeka, Portia Ambrose, Jacob Hamilton and Grey Hamilton; one great-granddaughter, Aniston Zeka; nephews, Bart, Paul and Tarry Bartholomew.
Dick will be missed by family and friends alike. He will be missed on the golf course and telling stories around the card table at the Tucson Country Club. He will be missed in the middle of a corn field in Kansas, surrounded by 50,000 Canada geese. He will be missed on a Canadian lake, fishing for walleye and northern pike with his friend Bill Noble. He will be missed sitting by his pool, watching the birds and sunsets in his beloved Sonoran Desert, his loyal dog, Nickie, by his side. The family requests, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in his memory to the Tucson Audubon Society, Ducks Unlimited or the animal shelter of your choice.
A memorial gathering was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 21, 2008, at the Tucson Country Club, with a future event to be held in Manhattan, Kan.

Juanita Anderson, 92, of Lakeland, Fla., died March 28, 2008, in Lakeland. Mrs. Anderson was born in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Feb. 4, 1916, grew up in St. Augustine and worked at the The Baptist Hospital in Jacksonville for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh C. Anderson.
She is survived by two sons, Robert Anderson of Lakeland and Terrell Anderson of Charleston, S.C.; a daughter, Anita Jo Wagoner of Asheville, N.C.; four grandchildren, Lavonne Benson, Matt Borum, Shannon Fowler and Carmen Anderson; and five great-grandchildren.

ANDERSON, Ludwig O.
Ludwig O. Anderson, 94 of Richboro, Pa., died peacefully Wednesday. Jan. 30, 2008 at Manor Care, Yardley. Born in Brunswick, Ga., Mr. Anderson was a former resident of St. Augustine, Fla., for 18 years. He was also a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy having served during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Since retiring as an auto mechanic who owned his own garage, Ludwig enjoyed fishing, gardening, cooking, and spending time with his family. He will be remembered by all as a kind and generous man.
Son of the late Gustav and Leila Fahm Anderson, beloved husband of the late Elizabeth Butts Anderson, he is survived by his daughter, Alice Anna Herbert and her husband, William of Richboro; five loving grandchildren, five dear great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

ANDERSON, Uteaner
Uteaner Anderson, 88, of St Augustine died December 2, 2007 at Moultrie Creek Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Mrs Anderson was the mother of Joe Ann Anderson Ulmer, a Civil Rights demonstrator and one of the St Augustine Four. Mrs Andersonwas born June 23, 1919. She was united in marriage to the late Hurley Anderson Sr, and the mother of 13 children. She was an active member and deaconess of Zion Baptist Church.
She retired from the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind, where she was employed for 23 years.
Uteaner was an active supporter of the Civil Rights demonstration and also an active supporter of her daughter's involvement in the demonstration during 1963. The youths were refused service at the Woolworth lunch counter and were subsequently sent to a reformatory school. Six months later they were released by the Governor's cabinet in 1964. Uteaner was a faithful supporter of the four youths, she even refused to sign the petition proposed for the parents of the four youth to sign and she also supported the Embrace our Youth Committee of St Augustine, FL.
Funeral services will be held 1 pm Saturday at Zion Baptist Church with the Rev James Samms, officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.Viewing will be held 5 to 8 pm Friday in the chapel of Leo C Chase & Son Funeral Home and from noon Saturday until the hour of service at the church.
She is survived by her sons, Hurley Anderson Jr, Miami, Edward Anderson, Vermont James Anderson and Randell (Anna) Anderson, all of St Augustine, The Rev Kendall Kent (Karen) Anderson, Avery Anderson, both of Jacksonville; daughters, Joe Ann Ulmer, Jacksonville and Dr Fay Anderson Davis, St Augustine; 45 grandchildren; 75 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. ANDREU, Esther Elizabeth (Sissy)
Esther (Sissy) Andreu, 80, went to the Lord with her family by her side on Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008, at Flagler Hospital after an extended illness.
Born on Sept. 22, 1928, in St. Augustine to Ambrose and Esther Nelson Colee, Esther was the youngest of eight children and a proud member of one of the prominent founding families who helped settle St. Augustine in the 18th century. Wed to Lloyd (Buck) Andreu in 1948, Esther was a devoted wife and mother who worked for more than 50 years as a medical assistant for five family practice physicians associated with Flagler Hospital (Drs. White, Devito, O'Connell, Hayes and Gunn). She was also a member of the San Sebastian Catholic Church. But most of all, Esther will be remembered for a lifetime of selfless care-giving to her brothers and sisters and extended family and friends. She always put the needs of her family and friends before her own.
Esther was also active in a number of local organizations, including the Menorcan Cultural Society, the Riverview Country Club, the St. Augustine Ballroom Dance Association and Heart Fund Ball.
Esther is survived by her daughter, Janet Andreu Jones of Tampa; her daughter, Marlene and husband Greg Brubaker of Gainesville; her granddaughter, Shannon, and husband, Quentin Ball of St. Augustine, Fla.; and two other granddaughters, Megan Brubaker of Tampa and Carly Brubaker of Gainesville. Esther was preceded in death by her sisters, Naomi, Edith, Lucille and Estelle, and brothers, Sterling, Louis and Ambrose Jr.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Craig Funeral Home with a short prayer service beginning at 7 p.m. A special video tribute to Esther will be presented at 6:40 p.m. just prior to the prayer service. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, at San Sebastian Catholic Church with burial following at San Lorenzo Cemetery.

He was born in St. Augustine and lived most of his life in the area. He was a veteran of the Korean War who served in the U.S. Army. He worked for many years as a brick and stone mason for many different contractors in St. Johns County.

ANDREWS, Carolyn Joyce
Elder Carolyn Joyce Andrews, 59, of St. Augustine, entered the sunset of life on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007, at Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine following an extended illness. The daughter of Johnnie Mae Andrews Wise and Curtis Joshua Rayam, Sr., she was a native of Palatka and a lifelong resident of St. Augustine. She was a 1966 graduate of Richard J. Murray High School. In 1970, she earned a B.S. in psychology at Bethune Cookman College, Daytona Beach. She served the Lord faithfully as an associate minister at Lighthouse Church of God. In October 2002, she was ordained as an Elder under the leadership of Pastor Chris Washington at "A" Level Christian Community Church. She was a longtime Social and Rehabilitative Services Supervisor at the former Fla. Dept. of HRS (now known as DCF). She has served as an administrator, teacher, office manager, and entrepreneur over her 30+ years career. In ministry, she was the founder & owner of "Just Ask Me Services." She was a prayer instructor, a workshop and seminar leader, and a former host of "Face to Face" (church television ministry). She opened her life up to others, as well as her heart to let others see a "work-in-progress" so that hope could be established abolishing hopelessness.

ANDREWS, Charles J.
Charles J. Andrews, 73, died at 11:50 a.m. Jan. 23, 2008, at Flagler Hospital. He was the loving husband of 52 years to his wife, Janet.
He died peacefully, surrounded by his eight children, whom he adored: Charlie Andrews, St. Augustine, Ed Andrews, Mansfield, Mass., Mary Cralley, Princeton, Minn., Janet Andrews and Theresa Merrill, both of Plainville Mass., Mark Andrews, New Sharon, Maine, Jane Bigelow, Dundee, Fla., and Ann Tallman of N. Attleboro, Mass. Charles is also survived by 22 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
He served in the National Guard for six years and was a machinist at Hill Machine Co. for 24 years, then Harwood Engineering for eight years, both in Massachusetts. Charles was born in Boston, Mass., and lived most of his life with Janet in Plainville, Mass., where they attended St. Martha's Catholic Church.
A memorial mass will be held there this summer. There will also be a memorial mass at Corpus Christi here in St. Augustine, where Charlie and his wife were parishioners.

ANGYALFY, Brent
Brent Angyalfy, 22, of St. Augustine, Fla., died Dec. 20, 2008, in a diving accident.
He was a lifelong resident of St. Augustine. He was currently attending Florida Community College in Jacksonville and would have obtained his associate's degree in the spring. His goal was to attend the building construction program at the University of Florida in Gainesville.
He held his boat captain's license and was an avid fisherman and scuba diver. He loved to surf and was a body boarder who had qualified and participated in the East Coast Championships. He played paddle tennis on the beach and courts around St. Augustine. He was a member of the St. Johns County Lifeguard Corps. He was a hunter and snowboarder. Brent was kind, polite, gentle, fair and a hard worker. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday(today) at Craig Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be held 1 p.m. until time of services at Craig Funeral Home. Flowers are gratefully declined. Bengt Hubert Agelii, 65, of Houston, Texas, died Jan. 30, 2008, at Odyssey Health Care Center in Conroe, Texas. Mr. Agelii was a native of Stockholm, Sweden and had resided in St. Augustine for many years. Mr. Agelii was a Swedish Navy veteran and later held various engineering and professional positions.

ANTHONY, Flavia H.
Flavia H. Anthony, daughter of John David and Beryl Marie Boydston Hall, was born April 25, 1924, in Camp, Ark. She died Jan. 19, 2009, in Jacksonville, Fla., at the age of 84 after a series of illnesses that finally took her life after 15 months.
Survivors include her husband, Richard A. Anthony of St. Augustine, Fla.; her two daughters, Phylis Moyer of Corinth, Miss., and Gail Nowlin of St. Augustine; her two sons, Lanny Hatman of Corinth and Gary Hatman of Harrison Township, Mich.; and three stepchildren, David Anthony, Holly Anthony and Beth Anthony; 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and many other family members and friends.
Flavia worked almost her entire life outside the home but was a dedicated mother and wife. She celebrated 35 years of marriage. Nothing came before her husband, children and grandchildren. She was a business woman.
Services are Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at 10 a.m. at Burks Chapel, Camp, Ark., with burial to follow in the Burks Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Cox-Blevins Funeral Home of Salem, Ark.

APPENZELLER, Dorothy A.
Dorothy A. Appenzeller, 87 of St. Augustine, Fla., died Oct. 4, 2009, at her home. She was born in England on Nov. 11, 1921, and had served in the English Army as an ambulance driver in World War II. She married Sgt. Maj. Henry Posner, who was serving in the U.S. Army.

Dorothy and her son, Stratton and daughter, Janice came to the United States in 1947. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting.

A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. on her birthday Nov. 11, 2009, at her home.

She is survived by daughter, Janice Edge, Grandin, Fla.; son, Stratton Posner, St. Augustine; brother, Eric Neeve, Gray County, Ga.; and two grandchildren, Kim Rist and Stratton W. Posner.

ARMSTRONG, John Alexander Jr.
John Alexander Armstrong, Jr. died on Feb. 23, 2010 at San Marco Terrace. He was born in St. Augustine on May 4, 1922, the first of three children for Maria Virginia Hernandez of St. Augustine and John A. Armstrong of Jacksonville. He attended public schools in Jacksonville, graduating from Robert E. Lee High School in 1940. Summers were often spent in St. Augustine where his maternal grandparents, Henry E. Hernandez and Alice Markle owned the Ocean View Hotel.
After a short course at Massey"s Business College, he worked for the Florida Dry cleaning and Laundry Board and, later, the U.S. Corps of Engineers, while saving money for college. He began studies at the University of Chicago in 1942, but was inducted in the army in November, serving with the 514th Engineer Depot in Liege, Belgium, during 1944-45.
He earned the Ph.B. and MA degrees from Chicago, then returned to Europe in 1949 as a member of the University"s mission to the University of Frankfurt, Germany. In 1950 he enrolled at Columbia University, where he received his Ph.D. in public law and government and the Certificate of the Russian Institute in 1953. Research for his dissertation on "Ukrainian Nationalism during World War II" involved interviews with Ukrainians, Germans, and other participants, as well as analysis of German documents. This was published in 1955, with new editions in 1963 and 1990.
Other books were "Ideology, Politics, and Government in the Soviet Union," "Soviet Partisans in World War II," "The Soviet Bureaucratic Elite," "The Politics of Totalitarianism," "The European Administrative Elite," and "Nations before Nationalism." In addition, he wrote numerous articles and reviews and served on various academic and governmental committees.
He made many research trips to the Soviet Union and lived in France, Germany, and England; but his preferred destinations were Mediterranean cities, where he enjoyed photographing early Christian mosaics and Islamic architecture.
Professor Armstrong taught at the University of Denver, Columbia University, and for 32 years at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, from which he retired in 1986. He was a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and various professional organizations, including the American Association for Slavic Studies, of which he was a past president. As a tour guide at the Cathedral Basilica, he emphasized the historical development of Catholicism in Northeast Florida.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Cathedral-Basilica of St. Augustine, the Rev. Andy Blaszkowski, Parochial Vicar, officiating. Burial in San Lorenzo Cemetery.

He married Annette Taylor in 1952. They have three daughters, Janet (David Blau), Carol (Terry Wilkins), and Kathryn (Vladimir Oustimovitch); three grandchildren: Kathryn, Michael, and Jack; his brother, Henry E. Armstrong; and numerous cousins. His sister, Alicia Ransom, is deceased.

ARMSTRONG, Martha
Martha Armstrong, 86, entered into eternal rest on Nov. 16, 2009, at the Ponce De Leon Care Center. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings of which she was the eldest. She attended public school in Putnam County and furthered her education in Tallahassee at the Trade School of Sewing and retired from the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind. She was a member of Tabernacle M.B. Church and served dutifully on the Deaconess Board, Missionary Society and Choir No. 1.

She is survived by a loving and devoted family, husband of 53 years, George Armstrong; her children, Johnel N., Gregory B., and Joel E. White, Sharon W. Williams and Juliet Thompson; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a host of cousins and many sorrowing friends.

Aubrey Allen Arnn Jr., 57, died suddenly of an aneurysm on Jan. 1, 2010, in Flagler Beach, Fla.

He is survived by wife, Tracy Arnn; mother, Margaret Arnn; father, Aubrey Sr.; siblings, Sharon and her husband Brad, David and his wife Lisa and their children Joshua and Cash, Matthew and his wife Corrie.

After graduating from Winter Park High School, Aubrey served in the U.S. Marines, then graduated from the University of Central Florida in 1977. He worked in a variety of executive positions with Eastern Airlines and with Federal Express in Macon, Ga., and in Tucson, Ariz., until he and his wife opened a bed-and-breakfast in 1999 in St. Augustine. Aubrey was a passionate soccer and rugby player, a devout Washington Redskins fan, a world traveler and a lover of art and good cigars.

He was a devoted husband, son, brother and a loyal friend. Aubrey will be sorely missed by all those who knew and loved him.

A small memorial took place Jan. 2, 2010, on Flagler Beach, in celebration of his life. In lieu of flowers or gifts, contributions may be made to the American Red Cross.

Joseph James Asconi
Joseph James Asconi entered into his eternal dream Sept. 21, 2008 at Flagler Hospital. He was born Jan. 2, 1919 in Jersey City, N.J., to his parents, Maria and Salvatore.
Joe served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and Korea, and later served in the Naval Reserves. He retired from the Colgate-Palmolive New Jersey plant in 1979. Mae and Joe came to reside in St. Augustine in 1982.
Survivors include his sister, Concetta LoBue and brother, Ralph Asconi, both of New Jersey; his sons, Jon Asconi (Sheena) of Christianberg, Va., and Joe Asconi (Nona) of St. Augustine. He has two grandsons, Shawn and Patrick, both of Virginia.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Mae; his sisters, Jeanette, Anna, and Angelina; his brothers, Salvatore, Jack, and Pat.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 p.m. till 7 p.m. with prayers at 6:30 p.m. The Funeral Mass will be Thursday at 9:30 a.m at the Cathedral-Basilica followed by burial at San Lorenzo Cemetery.

ATTERBERRY, Michael Keith
Michael Keith Atterberry was born on Aug. 19, 1957, and died Oct. 21, 2009. His parents were Sam "T'berry" and Beatrice "Bit" Atterberry. He was raised by his uncle and aunt, the Rev. T.L. and Sister Annie Mae Holtz.
Mr. Atterberry attended St. Johns County public schools and spent the majority of his life in the town of his birth.
Mike confessed Christ at an early age and was baptized at Gethsemane Baptist Church. He professed his faith in God although he did not maintain a church affiliation. Mike was a hard worker, having been employed in various capacities in the agricultural industry. At the time of his transition, he was employed by Jimmy Smith, a sod contractor.
Mike was a quiet man. He had many loyal friends with whom he spent much of his leisure time.

He was preceded in death by his adoptive parents, the Rev. and Sister Holtz, and his father.
Remaining to cherish his memory are his mother; a son, Termayne Roberts; an uncle, Ulysess "Tub" Borden; a grandson, Tremayne Roberts Jr.; two cousins, who were like a brother and sister to him, Tommy (Carol) Holtz and Pamela Holtz; special friends Marshall and Liz Blue; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Charles William Auge, 68, of St. Augustine, died July 29, 2009, at Flagler Hospital.

He was born in LaGrange, Ga., and had resided in St. Augustine since 1993, moving here from Illinois. He worked many years as the head of research and development for Magnaflux Corp., and after moving to St. Augustine, worked as a custodian at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind. James D. Augur, 61, died on Dec. 20, 2007, of lung cancer at Northeast Florida Community Hospice in Jacksonville, Fla.
James was a resident of St. Augustine, Fla. He served as adjunct professor at Flagler College in the Fine Arts department, where he was known for his passionate and inspirational approach to teaching. James was formerly a long-time resident of Covington, Ky., where he taught art in Cincinnati area public schools.

Kathleen Virginia Aul, 79, devoted wife, sister, aunt and friend, died peacefully Monday, Jan. 11, 2010.
She loved her family very much and was very devoted to them. She also loved the Lord and Savior and was a member of McDowell Baptist Church.
Kathleen Virginia Wagner Aul was born in Buchhannon, W.Va., in 1931 to William Wesley Wagner and Lavina Dade Harris Wagner.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Lavina Wagner; brothers, Wilbert Tharrel (Boots) Wagner, Clifford Aubrey (Cuff) Wagner, Raymond Wesley Wagner and Robert Stanley Wagner; and sisters, Mary Marie Wagner Wright, Georgia Ann (JoAnn) Wagner Thompson and Wanda Grace Wagner Bennett. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Harold Hartsell Hinkle.

She is survived by her husband of 20 years, Howard Wayne Aul, of St. Augustine, Fla.; stepsons, Matthew (Kathy) Aul of Columbia, S.C., and Mark (Valerie) Aul of Norfolk, Va.; grandchildren, Lisa and Charlie Aul; sister, Betty Lee Wagner Pierce of Satsuma, Fla.; numerous nieces, nephews, friends; and her beloved dog, Lady.
Kathleen was an avid gardener and an excellent cook. In her younger years she was employed by West Virginia Glass. After moving to Florida, Kathleen worked for 25 years for Hamblen Hardware.

A memorial service to celebrate Kathleen"s life will be held Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, at 11 a.m. at McDowell Baptist Church, followed at a later date by a private graveside service at Memorial Gardens Cemetery, Palatka, Fla.

AULETTI, Francis "Frank"
Francis A. "Frank" Auletti, 66, of St. Augustine, died on Dec. 10, 2008 at his residence in the Beach Walk community at Vilano Beach.
Frank was born in Red Hook, Brooklyn, N.Y., and had resided in St. Augustine for the past 10 years, moving here from Long Island, N.Y. He worked as a structural mechanic for Grumman Aircraft in Calverton, Long Island, and St. Augustine, retiring in 2004.
Frank was everyone's Santa Claus. A gentle man with a beautiful heart, his warmth and subtle humor brought joy to everyone around him. Music and theater were his passion. As a playwright, Frank wrote several plays for his wife's second grade class. He appeared on stage both in St. Augustine and with the community theater in Riverhead. The Beach Walk Dinner Club regularly held on Wednesday evenings in the dining room of his home brought him great pleasure.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday with a visitation beginning at 2 p.m. at St. Johns Family Funeral Home with The Rev. Patrick Carroll officiating. Interment at Florida National Cemetery will follow at a later date. A visitation will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today, Saturday at St. Johns Family Funeral Home. Frank is survived by his wife, Nancy Yakobiszyn Auletti of St. Augustine; daughters, Ann-Marie Mistretta of Shirley, L.I. , N.Y., and Anita Auletti of Lehighton, Pa.; sons, Anthony Auletti of Olathe, Kan., Andrew Auletti of E. Quogue, L.I., N.Y., Frank Auletti of S. New Berlin, N.Y.; sisters, Catherine Appel of Babylon, L.I., N.Y., Rita Hanson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; brothers, Bobby Auletti of Patchogue, L.I., N.Y., Michael Auletti of Missouri; and 13 beautiful grandchildren.

AUSTIN, John Lee
John Lee Austin, 70, of St. Augustine, died March 11, 2008, at Flagler Hospital. He was a native of Terre Haute, Ind., and had resided in St. Augustine since 2000. He worked as a personnel manager for Magnavox, General Electric, in the space program and for Zimmer Medical Supplies. After moving to St. Augustine, he worked part time for Magnet Force.

AUTRY, Susan Lynn
Susan Lynn Autry, 47, of St. Augustine, died Dec. 17, 2007, at Shands Hospital in Jacksonville. Mrs. Autry was a native of Daytona Beach, and had resided in St. Augustine since 1979, moving here from Dunn, NC.
Services: A memorial gathering will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday at Kotrady-Hudgins-Croyle Funeral Home, 209 S. Ponce de Leon Blvd.

AVERY, Henry
Henry Avery, 89, born Oct. 6, 1919, in Dorchester, Mass., passed away Oct. 21, 2008, in Jacksonville, Fla.
Mr. Avery, a 1941 graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was renowned for his natural business acumen and as a visionary who mentored many entrepreneurs on the First Coast for more than a quarter of a century.
A major in the First Infantry Division in World War II, Avery distinguished himself in North Africa and at Anzio Beach, Italy, earning the Legion of Merit, Italian Medal of Valor and the Order of Lafayette for his courage and bravery. In peacetime, he served the United States Secretary of the Army for 14 years as the civilian aide for Western Pennsylvania, working as a liaison between the community and the military.
As a leading executive in the field of manufacturing and technology, Henry Avery held key positions as a senior vice president for Koch Development Co., United States Steel Chemicals Division, Pittsburgh Chemical Co. and in a voluntary position, board chairman of Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce.
As president of Avery Business Development since 1981, Avery shared his wealth of business knowledge and his unwavering faith in the American dream. He connected people with innovative ideas and individuals of high net worth ("Angels") to help establish countless successful start-up businesses throughout the Southeastern United States. In conjunction with his venture capitalism, Avery founded the First Coast Venture Capital Group Inc. in 1995 and continued to be a vibrant community leader until the end of his life.
When asked, in one of several articles that were written about him during his long and illustrious career, how he would like to be remembered, Avery said, simply, "As a father and a husband ... that's the best thing." As a result of his extensive work he earned the nickname "King of Angels," and now he is among them. His parents, Henry Parkinson Dexter and Mary Ellen Mitchell Avery, predeceased him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Mary Ruth Halverson Avery, from Palatka, Fla.; and his children, Cynthia and Bernard Hardy, Deborah Frena, Eric and Billie Avery, and Sarah and Greg Perich; eight grandchildren, Avery and Erica Perich, Georgianna and Samantha Frena, Erin, James and Tammy Avery, Mary and Jayme Davis, and Alexander Henry Avery; two great-granddaughters, Arianna Perich and Katherine Avery; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Juelene and William Ballard, and his faithful Schnauzer companion, Savannah.
A visitation will be held 6-8 p.m. today with a memorial service in the chapel of Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Saturday.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Henry Avery Scholarship Fund for Entrepreneurs at Florida's only core-city business incubator, Beaver Street Enterprise Center, 1225 W. Beaver St., Jacksonville, FL 32204.

AYRES, Robert Leroy
Robert Leroy Ayres, 64, of Leroy, Pa., died March 11, 2008, at his home. He was a graduate of St. Augustine High School and later was the farm manager of Sunshine Biscuit Farms in St. Augustine and was the service manager for the Florida Truck and Tractor Co., of Palatka. He then started his own business, Bob's Manufacturing and Repair in Elkton, which he operated until 2002, when illness forced him to retire. He was of the Methodist faith.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie, at home; a son, Robert David of Jacksonville; a daughter, Alizon Overstreet of Garner, N.C.; three brothers, Richard of Milan, Pa., Ronald of East Troy, Pa., and Larry of Cotter, Ark.; four sisters, Shirley Keller of Wellsburg, N.Y., Waneta Ashley of St. Augustine, Marilyn Shout of Elmire, N.Y., and Joan Sweat of Green Cove Springs; and two grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the East Canton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Laura King officiating.
